you’ve never heard of Steve Molk? He just teamed up with Kevin Perry (no idea why, Kev had his own site, guess two noggins are better than one when trying to blog on TV).
I trust Molk.

Highly unlikely that it would have been given Seven’s track record in HD Sport broadcasting eg. Precious little AFL was in HD until last year.
I’m not sure if Seven HD will be launched by the time of the Australian Open (if that was planned, I think we would’ve heard something by now) or even before the new ratings year begins but I definitely think that they’d be aiming to have a launch before the 2016 AFL season starts.
Weird, on the TV4ME channel it’s saying HDTV in the LCN.
Probably because there’s actually a program called “HDTV” (from memory it’s actually about Harley Davidson motorcycles, hence the initials) airing on the channel!
Is the T20 BBL in HD? Looks like it is upconverted SD on ONE here of an evening when it gets dumped on ONE in QLD due to the Project. It definitely isn’t replayed the next day in HD (shame)
I agree. It’s always looked very average.
From what I’ve seen it is filmed with HD cameras?
a mate in the UK says it looks “fookin sensational” on Sky Sports.
Wish I could say the say the same here!
SBS HD really struggles sometimes now that the network is running 4 streams.
Couple of images from last night that probably happen when the other channels have a lot of motion simultaneously.
How would you say that the picture quality of SBS HD compares to Nine HD?
Personally, I think that SBS HD could probably benefit from a switch to MPEG4. Whether or not that’s likely to happen is another story of course.
I wonder if WIN will go HD this year .
Well I got myself a new set top box and can now receive the new HD channels.
SBS’s problem isn’t because of trying to run four channels, but because at the same time as they added Food Network, they started giving SBS SD a high bitrate.
Based on a quick sample I took, SBS HD would be at 10Mbps - about the same as pre-Food - if they ran SBS SD at the same rate as SBS2.
I would still advocate they go to MPEG-4, but this isn’t something they can’t fix without doing that.
SD simulcasts should be of the very bare minimal quality. You should also have popups to direct viewers to “watch in HD on channel xx” coming back from every break when the classification appears. All efforts should be directing people to HD. They should also flip the HD version to the historical channel numbers like 2,3,7,9 & 10.
This helps fasten the transition to HD and the removal of SD simulcasts.
I completely agree with all of that.
If HD/MPEG4-only TV is to become the new standard, then the networks should be doing their best efforts to direct viewers to the HD channels. Have the HD channel on the main LCN, display “Available in HD on Channel XX” pop-up graphics at the start of programs and/or returning from breaks, do the annoying picture format watermark additions on the SD channel rather than the HD one.
Perhaps most importantly, the networks really need to educate viewers about the difference between MPEG2 and MPEG4 digital TV broadcasting and why networks are generally launching newer channels in the latter format. I’m sure that viewers are perfectly willing to accept a transition to newer digital broadcasting formats if there’s a decent incentive to upgrade. Realistically, the main selling point for digital TV in it’s original MPEG2 format for your average viewer would’ve been addition of new multichannels with alternative programing above all else. Perhaps the main selling point for MPEG4 digital TV needs to be the networks having all or at least a majority of network channels available in HD.
Of course, online streaming and it’s major selling points of being able to watch TV on your smartphone or tablet will probably start to take over from traditional terrestrial TV as the primary form of delivery in years to come but that’s another story altogether…
I remember your confusion back a few months ago! Hope you’re enjoying them.
Wouldn’t it be amazing to start seeing this promo on air in the next week…
