HD Broadcasting

9HD here is also of superb quality.

I note 7MateHD finally on foxtel now box. I still don’t understand why it takes so long for these channels to come on given there is an aerial used to have these through the device. Still no sign of 9Rush or 10Shake.

And given 10 moving into being the home of football they’ll need to get 10Bold into HD ASAP.

Same here now on IQ4!

When did this happen?

No idea! I wonder if 7 stumped up the cash to Foxtel to pay for retransmission given the Olympics.
Also notice it has a proper logo in the search, not like 9GemHD had for months

Is it over satellite or is it coming in via the terrestrial antenna on your IQ4? This has always been the frustrating thing with the Foxtel IQ and the Foxtel Now box not having all the terrestrial channels available via your own antenna.

I’m IQ3, so via cable

I’m pretty sure it’s over terrestrial antenna. Foxtel just has to allocate a number. Something that could have been done ages ago.

For a price.

Foxtel channels are all 100+. It’d be nice if the IQ4 just automatically put all the terrestrial antenna channels into their usual LCNs below 100. Just let the IQ4 do a scan and add all channels like any other TV or STB would do, shopping channels and duplicates included.

Becomes an issue for the ABC/SBS radio channels in the 2xx/3xx range though.

The other thing that annoys me with the IQ4 is that you select the option in the channel menu for “Channels 9, 7, 10, ABC, SBS” and it only includes the standard def primary channels. Why not include all FTA multi-channels and the HD channels as well. I watch in regional so it might be different in metro though, and different again on cable.

exactly, hence channel numbers are waiting there for 9Rush and 10Shake but not so mysteriously they’re not broadcasting anything

And I’m sure Channel 9 paid to be on 100 rather than the more logical number of 109.

Wouldn’t be surprised if Kerry Packer pushed for Nine to be on Foxtel Channel 100, given that PBL owned Nine and had a 25% share in Foxtel when the Pay TV platform’s digital service was launched in 2004…

Yep. I do wonder what it costs for a free to air channel to get access to the iQ. Can’t be small bickies if the networks are OK with not having Foxtel viewers’ eyeballs.

I recall reading somewhere (it may have been in an ACCC document) there are two costs - an EPG cost + satellite transmission costs.

The costs must be significant, the ABC pointed towards the cost when they “streamlined” their offering on the platform (and then did some kind of additional deal as part of the A-League deal)

Foxtel shouldn’t be crippling a free-to-air television tuner by only allowing certain features to be available.

The ABC and SBS broadcast audio description isn’t available on Fetch boxes as Fetch couldn’t be bothered adding multiple language and multiple subtitles despite such functions being available on nearly every other tuner.

Not sure I agree with this - while it would be nice if they didn’t, the device is a Foxtel product and as such they set the parameters

The next pain is that there is no RF loop-through connection on the IQ4 for the terrestrial antenna so you then can’t hook it up to your TV easily to use your TV’s tuner along side the Foxtel box.

Unless of course you buy a coax splitter yourself or manually change the cable.

Of course Foxtel still want you to use only their box.

Free to air PVRs generally have better recording and playback functionality eg, more precise pausing, slow motion playback and has more recording options too (eg manual timer settings) than what the iQ boxes have.

The only reason why you’d use the iQ box for free to air is to have the “all in one” solution, but I still prefer using my Panasonic PVR for free to air rather than the FOXTEL one.
