Growing Home with Jamie Durie

TV host, author and environmentalist takes his passion for sustainability to new heights

The Seven Network is pleased to announce the return of Jamie Durie in an inspiring new documentary series following his family’s journey as they navigate the turbulent and challenging task of building a new eco home.

Coming soon to Channel 7 and 7plus, Growing Home with Jamie Durie features Durie, his partner Ameka and children – three-year-old daughter Beau and 18-month-old son Nash – as they build their dream home with off-grid capability in Sydney’s beautiful Northern Beaches.

Filmed across the two-year build, the series brings viewers a fresh combination of stunning architecture, energy and cost saving ideas, eco-innovation initiatives, home-building challenges, engineering feats, and garden extreme-scaping.

“This is the show I’ve always wanted to make”, says Durie.

“We wanted to prove that one can build sustainably and responsibly without compromise. We have worked hard for our dream and whilst its ambitious there are simple and cost-effective ideas here that everyone can use in their own new nest.”

While filming the series, the award-winning landscape designer was surprised to see his unique renovation story take a surprising turn: a pair of eastern ospreys choose a 42-metre-tall working crane on Durie’s building site for their new nest.

Working with NSW Parks and Wildlife and local council on safe relocation options for the endangered species, the Durie family ultimately decided to keep the crane in place until the ospreys’ chicks have hatched, fledged and left the nest naturally.

A livestream camera was installed so nature enthusiasts and curious observers alike can witness the remarkable and captivating footage of these majestic birds raising their family against the backdrop of the spectacular Pittwater peninsula.

“There is no way we would force another family out of their habitat simply to build ours,” says Durie.

“This series is about working with nature, not against it. Sharing the ospreys’ journey is all part of our eco quest as we build a home that’s not just healthy for our family, but also for the environment.”

Growing Home with Jamie Durie premieres later this year on Channel 7 and 7plus.

The series is produced by Rawkus Content (Backyard Blitz, Renovation Rescue, Costa’s Garden Odyssey, It’s a Knockout, Top Gear Australia) and hosted by seven-time TV WEEK Logie Award-winner Durie (The Block, Oprah Winfrey, Backyard Blitz, The Outdoor Room US - 26 series, House Rules), and brought to you by CSR.

Yeah I would’ve thought 7pm Saturdays or daytime weekends for this type of show, interesting scheduling.

I didn’t expect a 8.30 Friday timeslot for this. But can get why Seven want a “lifestyle night”.

Episode One

Friday 25 October at 8:30pm

In Growing Home with Jamie Durie episode 1, Jamie Durie sets himself a simple mission: to build a ‘house without compromise’ that is kind to the planet. But simple, it is not. Issues with neighbours, approvals, house design, asbestos and the steepness of the slope all take their toll.

Jamie learns of Geothermal technology that uses the earth’s temperature to heat and cool the house; he finds an emission-free fireplace, says goodbye to the current beach shack and partner Ameka brings a new Durie into the world.

Series Synopsis

Growing Home with Jamie Durie follows the three-year journey of the TV host, horticulturalist, and award-winning landscape designer. His long-term passion for the environment has compelled him to take on the biggest project of his life with his young family—partner Ameka, daughter Beau, and 18-month-old Nash.

Join Jamie and his family as they navigate the ups and downs of building their Australian dream home in the greenest way possible.

Jamie’s mission? To prove that it’s possible to build their dream home without compromise while treading lightly on the planet.

In preparation for this house build, Jamie has spent the last five years searching Australia and the globe to find the best sustainable products, companies and eco-innovation techniques to share new ways and fresh ideas with fellow Aussies to feather their own nests. “This is the show I’ve always wanted to make,” Jamie said.

In the process, Jamie has uncovered a revolutionary heating, cooling and renewable energy system that has the potential to be grid-independent with a minimum saving of up to 80 per cent off energy bills. A chemical and chlorine-free pool solution, a circadian rhythm lighting program that helps you get a good night’s sleep, windows and window coverings that are not only made of recycled ocean plastics but also reduce energy costs by up to 80 per cent and even a revolutionary Aussie concrete invention that reduces carbon emissions by a minimum 45 per cent. Jamie and his team have left no stone unturned, using his green filter build program.

As you might expect, Jamie Durie doesn’t do things by halves, and this is no exception. Jamie is building his split-level home on one of the most difficult sites in Australia, on a 37-degree slope, in a sensitive environmental zone that’s covered in protected spotted gums.

There are dramas with the neighbours, the council, the budget and the build; and on Growing Home, we get to see it all unfold!

For Jamie, it is his money, his reputation, and his future on the line…so why is he doing it? Jamie wants to share everything he has learned through this journey with Australia in the hopes to inspire Aussie homemakers to build a better future for our children and future generations. “Quite simply we want to leave the world in a better place, and we want to share new ideas on how to achieve your own home building dreams in a sustainable and responsible way.” But most of all, he wants his children to be proud of him!

Strap yourself in, this is going to be one hell of a journey!

Episode 4
Friday 15 November 8:30 PM

Jamie Durie finally reveals his eco-masterpiece, showcasing stunning interiors, landscapes, and grid-independent technology in this celebratory finale.

Most of tonight’s finale was a showcase of products and suppliers that Jamie used to build his family home. He literally dropped a name every second minute. While there are a dozen brands that viewers will be familiar with (as they had featured on other shows like The Block, House Rules and Dream Home), there are some products that only a few people can afford, such as a geothermal heat extraction system, and a specially made Railglider inclined lift from Railius.

Jamie said that the construction crane that had been installed on the home site would have to stay until after Christmas, so as not to disturb the nest which was built by a pair of eastern ospreys. He said the Northern Beaches Council is building a nesting pole at a nearby park, allowing the birds to relocate.

In the meantime, you can see the live streaming of the nest, via a camera perched on top of the crane, on YouTube.

He also said that he and his family would move in by Christmas.
