Interesting that GOLD chose a ‘glam rock’ image to represent the Bee Gees. The Brothers Gibb were many things, but ballroom blitz metal gurus they never were.
Smooth are currently playing the Bee Gees. Sounds a bit daggy though. I wouldn’t be surprised if they also pull the pin on them too. You can’t appeal to people who grew up in the 80s hating disco, by playing anything even resembling that era.
I agree. Just heard People Watching / Sam Fender on Breeze FM. That song would work so well on Gold. They followed it up with Stupid Girl / Garbage. That sounded so good. As you say, they don’t need to go overboard with the new stuff, but one or two an hour would make them sound so much more contemporary without annoying the older audience. In fact a lot of the older audience would actually enjoy a properly selected new track every now and again. That’s the type of radio a lot of Gen X and younger Boomers grew up with and are familiar with - Greatest Memories AND Latest Hits.
And also that a lot of the ‘latest hits’ around today is just too far removed from the pop/rock classic hits otherwise played on those stations, it would be too jarring a transition from eg Katrina & The Waves to Kendrick Lamar.
Whereas if there was a lot more pop/rock based stuff like Taylor Swift or Foo Fighters around, there might still be some ‘Greatest Memories, Latest Hits’ formats.
Interestingly, when it comes to ‘spread’ in years, the EDM stations have significant range. On Dance Hits and Nova Nation you can hear tracks from the 80s (such as S-express, Ride on time), 90s (N-trance, Dr Alban, Jam & Spoon, Corona) right through the 00s, 10s to 2025.
Of course no real segues required, as EDM is timeless.
The trouble with so many white Australian-born Aussies is they’re mired in the music of their youth. TBH I don’t think too many of them are even interested in any music that’s not st-st-st-stuck in the 80s and 90s.
Not true, it just has to be good music, doesn’t matter the decade. Sadly as time goes by, more of the newer music seems to be moving away from what I consider music eg. a melody with a rhythm, a guitar, drums and good singing vocals.
Errr. Yeah. I think old people were saying the same when rock n roll first burst onto the scene.
What I said is true particularly when you look at this forum. People seem to be obsessed with old obscure 80s tracks and very rarely does anyone on here doff their hats to any new stuff.
Speaking of new stuff. I’m not sure that Gold necessarily has to play any new songs, or even re-currents. But more music from the mid 2000s certainly wouldn’t go astray. Stuff that’s 20 years old now, that a 45 yo would have been listening to when they were 25 on 2DAY or FOX.
Play an Armand Van Helden - Hear My Name for example and it would fit in perfectly with the target demo of Gold. Sure never part of the playlist back in 2005 on WS or Gold 104, but that doesn’t matter - those listeners have now migrated here.
Be adventurous. New Look. New Sound. Less Granny more DJ Sammy.
Just for a cockroach here could you compare loosely to the coverage on FM to be similar to C91.3 coverage of the Sydney basin. I’d say CADA has a wider area covered to be compared to The River.
If you are talking about the ‘Great Songs on Radio’ thread, the key to that thread is ‘rarely’ heard on radio… you can’t say that about newer songs because they tend to get flogged all the time as they tend to be on high rotation when newer…
But when their popularity fades and start to become heard on the radio only occasionally, that’s when I’ll start to mention the ones I like.
There’s plenty of new music out there. If there wasn’t, triple J would be Double J and we wouldn’t have the CHR trifecta of B105, KIIS and Nova.
I guess the question is for Gold: is there enough new music that would fit in with their format?
Try:
Teddy Swims - Bad Dreams The Weeknd - Dancing in the flames Hoozier - Too sweet Lady Gaga/Bruno Mars - Die with a smile Jelly Roll - Liar Slow it down - Benson Boone
Just for starters.
The advantage that Greatest Memories/Latest Hits stations used to have was they could rely on their core artists for both. For example on 4KQ in 1993 you’d hear River of Dreams, and Honesty, Always a woman, Piano man et al.
Gold doesn’t have that these days. Though if they’re now playing Bad Romance, then why not her most recent stuff as well?
The reality of coverage for River across Brisbane is far different to what the map suggests. In car reception in particular is very decent right across the southern half of the metro area, and also quite good in the car in the north east. Indeed it’s also very strong on the M1 towards the Gold Coast. Outer North and the north west are the only really problematic areas. I’ve got friends on the north side with River on their car presets.
