If 2UE had a decent marketing budget - but being ran by ACE, I’d say unlikely - they should flood the Sydney market with ads like “wondering where the classic hits went? They’re now on 2UE”

Even be cheeky and have a picture of a tombstone with “R.I.P. WSFM”!

Might steal a few share points off Gold 101.7

I started it but didn’t think it would drift the thread so far off topic!

I have my phone in my bedroom but always turn it off at night. Can understand why people use the phone though because it is much easier. I’m not old by the way!

If 2UE were serious, they would recruit ex-WSFM/2WS Sydney-based announcers to spearhead a local lineup.

This is half the reason why BBQ Bob is so popular on 4BH.

Using the Black Keys GOLD on the ceiling. Notably a song never played on WS FM, nor Gold 104.3, nor likely to be played either.

But then again, with Amanda and Jonesy talking about getting tattoos, maybe the MMM audience is who they’re appealing to.

IMO the ad makes too much noise about WSFM rather than Gold101.7… with Jonesy even stating that he really wanted a WSFM tattoo over a Gold101.7 tattoo.

To me, it gives the perception that J&A even miss the old WSFM brand.

There’s a heap of billboards around Melbourne at the moment for Gold 104.3. One on the Princes Fwy inbound at Laverton stuck with me, as it read:

LESS BEE GEES
MORE BON JOVI

I’m hardly the world’s biggest Bee Gees fan, but even to me that sounds like a terrible change.

Why would you diss one band over another?

And a band with Aussie connections over one with none? Sure, their heyday might have been a bit earlier, but only really a decade or so.

Yeah, I found it weird too…

Doesn’t sound weird to me. Two translations come to mind:

“If you remember us playing the Bee Gees, those days are over, you’re too old for this station now. We’re only going back to the 80s, not the 70s.”

and,

“The Bee Gees? Who are they? But, Bon Jovi I’ve heard of, I should take a listen. Oh they also play Lady Gaga, I remember that song when I was a kid.”

Not saying I agree or disagree, but it’s their way of saying they’re “moving on” and leaving you behind. And that they want some of that Triple M cume. My translation anyway.

That’s not what he says.
The line is “and you wanted to get a WS tattoo”.

Its mixed messaging to me.

I heard them play The Eagles “Hotel California” (released in 1976) last night. I’m sure there’s other 70s songs they still play too.

Definitely nothing wrong with the Bee Gees music.

They probably should say “More Music from the 80s to now” or something more general rather than targeting specific bands.

I get it, they’ve moved forward a decade and want you to know.

I just don’t like Bon Jovi that much :joy:

But 40+ women do!

I’m not sure why you’d say less Tay Tay when you’ll inevitably have to play it in a few years - and maybe even already should be.

I agree, nothing against The Bee Gees. They did say “less”, and not “none”, so that’s a good point.

They’re wanting to shed their 65+ (and maybe even some 55-64) listeners for younger, higher disposable income demographics?

Smooth FM pretty much has those older age groups covered, so instead of trying to compete with Smooth, they could be looking to steal some younger listeners from Triple M and be dominant in the 40-54. “Less Tay Tay” could also be a good indicator of that.
