i think it might have been some yarn about the arrival of Europeans by sea to form the early penal settlement, or something like that. Not something you’d hang your brand on these days, obvs.
Does their contract expire this year?
You’d hope ARN have learnt their lesson about trying to network breakfast after the KIIS debacle.
And Christian is relatively unknown in Sydney as well.
Not sure - this website says it should have expired last year though
The duo tell Woman’s Day their contract is up at the end of 2024 and admit they’ve been approached to make the move to breakfast TV.
so not sure if they re-uped for this year only, or what
i think at this stage KIIS would do anything to afford K&JO
I think they’d have the opposite problem to KIIS with that if they tried - Christian is great and will be able to adapt his show for a national audience, but I think would really hurt them in Melbourne changing the show to remove the hyper Melbourne stuff.
We all know why ARN want to rebrand, to make networking easier. All these little stories they are spinning are embarrassing.
What I don’t understand is why did they need to make such a big song and dance about it in the first place? Although that does seem to be their modus operandi to be honest. They could just as easily have Id’d as Gold 101.7 WSFM for 3 to 6 months and then gradually dropped the WSFM. Most people wouldn’t have really noticed or be bothered about it. But now they’ve made it into such a “thing”.
I really do wonder about the intelligence of management, it just seems to be one crisis after another.
A Radioinfo article from 2022 said that J&A signed a multi-year deal with WS/Gold, but it didn’t specify how long the contract runs for.

Years ago, Hobart’s TTT surveyed its listeners and they conveniently suggested that the station should have a name that more closely represents Hobart’s connection to the sea… and so Sea FM was born.
I suspect that’s marketing spin…bet not one call was made…

Another joke. Hobart isn’t even on the coast.
Really…not sure we are an inland city…
To me, Hobart is more on a river than the coast… and a river isn’t a sea.

Hobart is more on a river than the coast… and a river isn’t a sea.
Just like how Sydney and Brisbane are on rivers as well.
No part of metro Hobart faces the ocean however, unlike the others you mentioned
Anyhow, we are getting off topic.

And Christian is relatively unknown in Sydney as well.
And he’s not the unknown English DJ either. He’s the English EJ who moved to Melbourne these days.
Just heard a promo on WSFM, oops, sorry Gold101.7 confirming Jonesy & Amanda back next Mon 20th.
It’s all over the Gold101.7 socials too.
Why OC over J&A either? Arguably much more well know. And established.
look, I would rather J&A stay too, but just fearful of how much ARN would potentially do to save a couple of bucks to pay Kyle and Jackie O.
They got rid of Mitch Churi easily…
I’m asking why him over J&A.
Because he’s one person with a much broader (national) appeal with his style.
The main changes at Gold look like they’ll happen next Monday eg music.
Maybe wait and see then?
Surely ARN would’ve rolled out the adjusted music format when the new name was launched? I can’t see more bigger changes happen now to Gold101.7?
I hope you’re right, but it was stated that the playlist would be refreshed (to include newer songs to move with the target demos), and it doesn’t seem any different to me yet.
It’s been speculated that the changes were in two stages, branding back on 2nd, music refresh when J&A return.
Listening to Cathy Jubb this morning and back announcing Khe Sanh she’s making a big thing about 2UE being the only station in Sydney that plays the 70s, so if you love the 70s, like we do here, 2UE is the only station. Then straight into an ad for Sunday morning 60s. Straight out of the break - Wings - With a little Luck.
So definitely a pitch at WS listeners. Gold needs to clearly define what their format is. They’ve hinted that they’re changing it, but until Sydneysiders get clarity, they may very well settle with a station that is unashamedly doing a well-defined ‘Classic Hits’.
Because with 2UE you know what you’re going to get.
(Just on the whole ‘only station that plays 70s’ I’d suggest that’s not entirely true. MMM still play Khe Sanh!)
