…stage show, held on Thursday, November 23, promises to capture the essence of Jonesy & Amanda’s Breakfast show with a blend of guests, music and several surprises.
As mentioned in KIIS thread (quoting an AFR report), Christian O’Connell’s Gold breakfast show will continue after he signed a new five year contract with ARN.
The question is though… is the contract attached to Gold or ARN. The shares which vest at the end of the contract make it sound like ARN. I imagine this is clarified in the contract.
To me it sounds like ARN will want to keep Christian and would move him to Triple M. A risky move though. Audiences don’t always follow moving talent (although K&J showed that they can). To pull it off they’d need to completely switch formats. Christian does well not just because he’s good (which he is) but also because he’s on a great sounding station with broad appeal, playing more music than talk through most of the day and without obnoxious content. That’s all very un-Triple M. Even if they significantly change formats, can they change enough to keep Christian’s audience, but also keep enough to retain the value in the Triple M brand might resonate well with advertisers?
Triple Ms playlist has slowly been moving towards a “Classic Hits” format anyway… the only thing is they’d have to drop the sports flavour - at breakfast anyway.
They could still keep the blokey / sports themes in other timeslots if they wanted.
Not certain at all. The board won’t want to relinquish their control, though SCA shareholders should be asking serious questions if it doesn’t happen. On the surface at least it looks like a good deal that’s currently financed by too much debt.
ARN would have to be making all decisions now with the possibility of a takeover/restructure being considered. It’s what they want and even if it doesn’t happen this time, I’m sure they’ll be looking to retry or make other changes in the next 5 years.
I do wonder if it does go ahead how they will tackle Perth. We don’t have a real Gold or KIIS station and Triple M Perth has a completely different format to the rest too. I think they will always need to keep Perth local, especially with the Timezone difference and east coast content isn’t very well received.
