Commentary and hosting team boasts 34 Commonwealth Games medals

A group of Australia’s most trusted and recognisable sports presenters will lead the Seven Network’s unrivalled host and commentary team as Australia’s Home of the Commonwealth Games unveils another history-making broadcast undertaking on Seven and 7plus Sport.

In just 50 days, Seven’s coverage of the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games will come to life across 22 exclusive and free, live and replay channels on Seven, 7mate and 7plus Sport. Leading the coverage is Australia’s most loved and respected sports broadcaster, Bruce McAvaney.

Calling the highly anticipated athletics programme from Glasgow, McAvaney – who recently received the prestigious Commonwealth Games Australia Order of Merit – will be joined at Scotstoun Stadium by three-time Australian Commonwealth Games gold medallist, Tamsyn Manou, 1993 Stawell Gift winner, Jason Richardson and Commonwealth Games medallist, David Culbert.

In swimming, seven-time Commonwealth Games gold medallist Ariarne Titmus joins Seven’s coverage from the pool deck alongside callers Commonwealth Games and Olympic medallist, Giaan Rooney, paralympic swim champion, Annabelle Williams and lead swimming caller Alister Nicholson, bringing unparalleled insight to the action from the heart of Glasgow.

Seven’s exemplary hosting lineup will be led by Sunrise host Matt Shirvington, Emma Freedman, Mel McLaughlin, Jason Richardson, Johanna Griggs, Matt White, Rebecca Maddern, Trent Copeland and Lizzie Jelfs.

Fellow Commonwealth Games medallists Catherine Cox and Kim Green will call all the netball action as our dominant Australian Diamonds look to defend their gold medal-winning Birmingham 2022 campaign, while Kate Bates and Scott McGrory provide the soundtrack to Seven’s track cycling coverage. Clive Adams and Lynsey Clarke round out the team as Seven’s Bowls and Para Bowls callers.

For Bruce McAvaney, anticipation is building in what promises to be an extraordinary athletics programme featuring many of the world’s greatest athletes.

“Few events capture the imagination of Australians quite like the Commonwealth Games, and Glasgow 2026 promises to deliver another unforgettable chapter.

“The form we’ve already seen from our athletes this year suggests Australia is building towards something very special,” he said.

“Lachlan Kennedy announcing himself with two sub-10 second runs was remarkable to see. Cam Myers continues to emerge as one of the most exciting young middle-distance runners we’ve seen in years, while Nina Kennedy continues to thrive on the big stage. What she achieved in Paris elevated her to another level, and you sense there is still even more to come from her as she continues her impressive comeback on her way to defending her title in Glasgow.

“These are the stories that make the Commonwealth Games so compelling. The triumphs, the setbacks, the breakthroughs – and the chance to see athletes rise to the occasion under pressure, in front of a huge global audience.

“There is nothing quite like calling history as it unfolds, and we are incredibly excited to share every unforgettable moment from Glasgow 2026 with Australians live and free on Seven and 7plus Sport.”

Viewers will wake up to major live events and medal moments each day with Johanna Griggs, 1990 Commonwealth Games medallist, and 7NEWS Sport Presenter, Matt White as they steer Seven’s morning broadcast from 3.30am AEST.

Shortly after the daily early morning coverage, Australia’s #1 breakfast show Sunrise will bring viewers all the latest Glasgow 2026 news and exclusive athlete interviews from 5.30am, with Katie Brown broadcasting live from AUSHQ – home to more than 400 Australian athletes, coaches and officials, as well as their families.

Esteemed broadcaster and 7NEWS Melbourne Chief Sport Presenter, Rebecca Maddern will guide Seven’s afternoon audience through daily highlights featuring exclusive interviews with victorious athletes and their families and friends, every day throughout the Games.

With exclusive access to our golden Australian athletes from the heart of the action, 7NEWS will have viewers covered at 6.00pm every night of the Games, with all the biggest breaking news delivered by accomplished sport reporters Tom Sacre, Kate Massey and Xander McGuire.

Following 7NEWS, two of Australia’s most popular broadcasters – Matt Shirvington and Emma Freedman – will guide, inform and entertain audiences through Seven’s prime time coverage from 7.00pm, bringing viewers all the live medal moments and interviews with our star performers.

Each night Mel McLaughlin and Jason Richardson will be live from the host city with the best of the late-night coverage of the Games, alongside a rotating cast of nightly guests and unrivalled access to the biggest stars of the Games.

Keeping viewers completely up-to-date overnight will be former Australian cricket star and 7Cricket expert, Trent Copeland alongside popular 7Horse Racing analyst, Lizzie Jelfs.

From 10.00pm through to 6.00am daily, Australians can also keep up with the latest from Glasgow 2026 via the Triple M radio network, with Seven’s exclusive commentary broadcast live on air ensuring uninterrupted access to key events as they unfold.

Matt Shirvington said: “Glasgow is set to deliver everything we love about the Commonwealth Games – passion, unpredictability, and moments that can define careers overnight.

“For me, that’s what makes this event so special. It’s where new stars emerge, where established champions are tested, and where Australia always shows up on the big stage.

“There’s a real energy to this Games too. It’s hard to remember a time where our athletics team was this strong. Peter Bol is hungrier than ever to go one better and claim his first Commonwealth Games gold. Angie Ballard is set to make history as the first Para athlete to compete at five Commonwealth Games. Her last gold medal was in Glasgow in 2014 – can she do it again?

“Then there’s Lachie Kennedy. What he’s managed to do on home soil over the past 12 months is nothing short of extraordinary. We will all be holding our breath as he makes his Games debut. Get ready Australia, this is going to be epic.”

Emma Freedman added: “Nobody does the Commonwealth Games better than Australia.

“Our Para swimming squad has been announced and what genuine star power it brings. Our gold medallists Col Pearse and Tim Hodge lead the way, and then there’s a beautiful next chapter emerging with 14-year-old Mia Hogan. Champions, leaders, and the future all in one squad.

“And our Aussie Diamonds, led by the incomparable Liz Watson. The calmness she brings to the court, and the way this group just knows how to perform when it matters, it’s impossible not to feel excited about what’s ahead. They’ve built an incredible standard over a long period of time, and that expectation and pressure just seems to fuel them.

“We know how dominant we are at these Games, and it’s not just in the pool or on the netball court – it’s across every discipline, every day, every session.

“With more than 200 events with gold, silver and bronze medals up for grabs, this is a Games where Australia will once again be right at the centre of the action and we can’t wait to take you there.”

The Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games will bring together over 3,000 athletes from 74 nations, with the largest-ever integrated para-sport program, featuring a streamlined 10-sport program.

Glasgow 2026 will feature 10-days of jam-packed action, consisting of athletics and Para athletics (track and field), swimming and Para swimming, artistic gymnastics, track cycling and Para track cycling, netball, weightlifting and Para powerlifting, boxing, judo, bowls and Para bowls, and 3x3 basketball and 3x3 wheelchair basketball.

More than 200 gold medals will be up for grabs across the 10 days of competition including the biggest track cycling and swim programs ever seen at a Commonwealth Games, with 26 medal events in the velodrome and 56 medal events in the pool.

Green and Copeland are married.

Meaning they’ll be here in a studio.

So Mel and Jason are the only ones that’ll be there, for 90 minutes a day…

I think athletics and swimming will be commentated from location while netball, bowls & cycling seems to be done from here.

Other events are probably a ‘world feed’

Looks like a break for Home and Away.

That’s a pretty good team.

I haven’t seen or heard any hype about it this. It’s going to be interesting to see how it rates.

Their promo campaign for it was awful. Bunch of people in front of the big led screen

I will be there in person

A poor promo seems fitting for a largely irrelevant event. Swimming will probably rate fine if it’s at a reasonable hour.

Notable person missing is Hamish McLachlan.

Some of their ‘host’ selections are curious, such as burying Griggs and new returned talent White in AM and promoting Shirvington and Freedman to prime time.

Unless that’s by design, in a sense of time zone actually meaning several key moments might be in the AM and also given his major network role/salary they want to extract value from Shirvo’s contract. Freedman not really sure though, Annette Sharp correctly called this one a couple of months back, I mean she has increased her presence across Seven Sport in recent years.

All of the above were involved in Tokyo 2020 Olympics as well, except Jelfs and Green.

Wonder if McLachlan, following his hiatus overseas a couple of years ago and a seemingly diminished presence even on 7AFL was his choice, as is this. Could also be he doesn’t want to take part in a perceived lesser event, as yeah nobody quite knows if this’ll be received well or flop.

He’s probably doing sunrise so that could be why he’s for the early session?

I’m not really surprised Shirvo has got the prime time gig given he hosts Sunrise. Freedman though is a surprising appointment, albeit I’m sure she will do a good job.

As for Hamish, perhaps he just wants to focus on AFL?

They are already losing Nicholson with AFL which leaves them with 3 main callers and 1 part time. So I don’t think they could lose another. So that could be it

Wonder if Comm Games or AFL will get main channel?

Early session that finishes at 11pm. By the time he gets home he would have to get up for Sunrise. You’d think he would not be hosting Sunrise during this time.

AFL by a mile I would imagine. It didn’t get kicked off the main channel last time, and it’s even less relevant this time with fewer events being covered.

Ariarne Titmus spoke to Alister Nicholson at the MCG tonight ahead of Hawthorn v Western Bulldogs.

Paralympic Swimmer Alexa Leary is in discussions with Seven about a possible role

While details of her on-camera role with Seven were still being finalised, Leary said she was looking forward to cheering her Dolphins teammates on from Australia.

“I don’t know how I will be involved yet, but we are talking with Seven. I can’t wait to watch all my teammates and close friends compete,” she said.
