Gladiators

Those captions probably seemed like a good idea at the time.

Wonder if they had the chance to add in a bit with the winners suiting up as Gladiators at the end of the episode, given a return seems unlikely.

Still funny.

For the grand final, the Wall has been supersized with two red and two blue large hexagonal cones near the top.

Beau’s not looking for work at all.

Do you understand the concept of a joke?

Yes but the irony is he has two other shows on Ten

 That’s why it’s a joke, mate. Not irony.

Congratulations to tonight’s grand final winners: Kalani Lenehan and Taylah Bisshopp.

At least they didn’t have to record three endings

Well at least the trophy is quite nice. The lack of atmosphere really comes through in those screencaps.

The grand final was outstanding, with two all-time great Eliminators between four worthy grand final contenders!! What a heartbreaker the female Eliminator ended up being for Janice, hitting the travellator first but failing to get up it on her first try which allowed Taylah to come through from behind and snatch the title.

I loved the changes they made to both the Eliminators (removing the first platform for the hand ladder and instead adding the teeter totter plus a longer rope climb directly to the hand ladder) and The Wall (the two extra obstacles at the top).

I agree with the comment about the blurbs - they have been quite funny to catch each episode and are a better way of subtly injecting personality into the show than a lot of the forced banter from the Gladiators. The whole show was edited far better in the semi finals and final, and it’s easy to see how much better paced it would’ve been had it been in a one hour timeslot instead of 75-80 minutes.

How did we get it so wrong.

I think this is a good example of a show where they should have taken a “wait and see” approach. If 10 had done that, they could have seen what worked and what didn’t, to come up with a better product.

Absolutely. Could have potentially arranged to send our gladiators/contestants/hosts over and filmed on the UK set.

Not really a case of “wait and see” - it’s just yet another case, like with the Big Brother House of Love, Ultimate Tag and that Balloon Show, where the minute something was announced viewers could see it was absolutely a non-starter - but TV execs don’t and sign off on a product which is obviously destined to fail. Similarly scheduling a sports-entertainment as an alternative to once of the biggest annual sporting events of the year should have been a non-starter.

Obviously they have the reality of budgets to consider but producing a flop on the cheap is always going to end up a costlier move than giving a show the money it needs to have a chance to succeed. I think the Day 1 v Day 2 ratings show there was an appetite there for the show, but the product delivered didn’t satisfy the hunger.

Whether the quick burn off was wise I don’t know - it certainly needed pulling from this week (Survivor/Deal should have been scheduled for this week from the beginning anyway) but could a slow burn off at the back end of the week given them the chance to salvage something from the wreckage.

Gladiators tie-in on this Queensland story tonight.

I’ve whipped up some proper opening credits, using the original 90’s theme, with some some updated mixing, and some sound effects, and various footage.

That is so much better!

Absolutely superb. The sooner networks realise that a theme/intro can add to a show, the better. Aussie TV lost a lot of its soul when much of this was taken away
