General TV History

The shocking graphics on Nine News (then known as National Nine News) from 14 January 2008 to October 2006. Coincided with the day A Current Affair interviewd that party boy.

Was that Principal Skinner at the end?

RIP Mario
Have been told it use to be big back in the day. Wrestlers loved coming here cause they made plenty of money. Sadly died out in the late 70s so I didn’t get to experience it.

Was told by my late grandmother they use to have studio wrestling at NBN back in that era. Don’t know if it was the same promotion or not.

You can smell the cheapness from a mile away.

Wide World of Sports theme from 1997 to a Rugby League semi final. Preceded by a long Still the One ident from QTQ.

Now here’s something random: a Punjabi-language news bulletin using the music from a Nine ident from the early 90s as its opening theme.

I saw a news bulletin from one of the countries of the Indian subcontinent using the Australian Seven logo as their own. I’ve also noticed one of the CCTV channels in China pretty blatantly ripped off the ABC’s sliding panel design for their news graphics. Clearly these lesser developed countries don’t give much of a damn about trademark infringement.

Not to mention WIN Caribbean

I wonder if they use cover ups at all?

I guess as opposed to WIN Australia using just Australia as part of their watermark, WIN Caribbean seems to use planet earth as part of theirs!

I wonder if Bruce has a large antenna or dish installed at home in Bermuda to watch WIN Carribean? (Interesting that they have “Eyewitness News” from 5pm also!).

Then again maybe not as I’m sure he would hate seeing dotty instead of mappy (which wouldn’t work very well over there because there’s so many islands!).

The final episode of the short-lived MASH spinoff AfterMASH, aired on 10 TV Australia.
This episode never aired in America.

This is the News segment from a 30 year anniversary special for TEN. I couldn’t see it anywhere on You Tube but you will recognise elements that were re-used in the recent 50 year special so it might be somewhere.

It’s mostly a bit of fun but the first two items are very early news openers.

It was from the special Forty Fun Years which was made in 1996 to coincide with 40 years of Australian television… although Ten itself had only been on the air for around 30.

And like with any flashback special there are inaccuracies. Even in that news promo featuring David Johnston and Jana Wendt it showed “1982” in the caption when in reality in 1982 Jana was already over at Channel 9 for 60 Minutes. She left Channel 10 at the end of 1981.

The promo would have dated from 1980 given that there was a send-up of the ad campaign in TV Week later that year featuring 10’s Sydney and Melbourne newsreaders:

There was also a version of that promo made for Channel 0 in Brisbane with Brian Cahil and Des McWilliam:

Of course, thanks to FlemishDog for uploading this one!

You know the drill, when you find a good news promo syndicate it across the network. Although I’ve not seen an Adelaide version surface but SAS didn’t have a double newsreader format then.

I can’t remember when i saw it, but like with so many promos in Australia that news promo was adapted from the Americans. What a surprise

Some elements of the TV coverage of the 1983 America’s Cup as seen on Seven in Australia. Seven ironically used the local Newport station that IDed as TV-10 (WJAR Providence, RI). The NBC affiliate included Paul Marshall from Seven on their panel. He was recently seen on the Seven News countdown special reminiscing about the Cup.

Ten joined with CBS Boston affiliate WBZ 4 to provide coverage while Nine I’m assuming teamed up with ABC. Each network had a separate satellite feed with pictures from the race different on each channel. (I was surprised there was enough satellite capacity). The areal footage that was the majority of coverage came from helicopters and blimps - there were at least two - you could often see the opposition blimp in shot. ABC metro (at least in Brisbane) had no coverage.
