General TV History

Here’s a rather interesting walk-through by current WIN Tasmania sport presenter Brent Costelloe of the old former TVT6/TAS TV/WIN TV studios out at New Town, Hobart before the move in late November 2014.

Here’s a story from The Examiner newspaper a few days ago too talking about how Southern Cross Launceston is on the move, similar to WIN’s Hobart move and Southern Cross’ Hobart move also.

There won’t be any of these old heritage studios left soon. That Southern Cross building dates back to the early 1960s, built for what was originally TNT9 and also housed its sister radio station 7EX.

I don’t think I knew about TVT6 moving from its original site, either.

I only knew about TVT6 moving when I saw a Twitter picture put up by 936 ABC Hobart which deep in the background included the ABC, TDT and WIN logos. Then when I was next down that way I saw it myself and saw that the New Town Road site was now completely WIN free, prior to that it had half been leased to other parties about 10 years ago.

Some left that I can think of at the top of my head:

NRN Coffs Harbour and Lismore
STQ Mackay
RTQ Toowoomba
AMV Albury
TNT Launceston
STV Mildura
NEN Tamworth
BCV Bendigo

Not sure how many of these are slated for upgrade lr removal soon

There were plans to convert the old RTQ Rockhampton building site on Dean St in to a Coles. Haven’t heard anything lately though.

Prime has got out of its heritage site in Albury AFAIK. Prime was also selling off the NEN site in Tamworth. Production shifted from both sites to Canberra some time ago while shifting remaining local staff to smaller premises.

Technically Southern Cross Ten is still at the old CTC7 studios in Canberra although that wasn’t CTC’s original site. The station was originally based on Black Mountain before moving to its current site in the 1970s.

I thought they still kept Albury as a sales office? It is in a rather strange spot though…Way out in Lavington. I guess it was chosen back in the day due to the fantastic line of sight to Baranduda.

If I’m not mistaken, Prime7 Albury now has new and smaller scale facilities for local newsroom/sales purposes while the most recent news set from the old Lavington studios went to a local museum.

Lavington was meant to be sold back in 2013/14, with remaining news and sales staff to be shifted to a new spot in central Albury, but according to White Pages they’re still at Lavington

Prime website also says that they are still at Lavington. Any idea where in town they are moving to? Near where SCA is?

No idea. Maybe waiting to sell before finding a new home.

Though NBN is the only one I can think of whose operations at their heritage site is still virtually unchanged since the 70s ie. at Mosbri Crescent in Newcastle, they still present local news, do playout, sales etc

Another 50th birthday milestone passed us by last month… albeit a fairly minor one!

SDQ4, covering Warwick and the Southern Downs in Queensland, was officially opened on 26 February 1966. It wasn’t really a new TV station as such but rather just a relay station of DDQ10, Toowoomba.

DDQ/SDQ were later branded on-air as “Television 10-4” and later “TV 10-4-5” following the launch of the DDQ5 translator in Toowoomba city.(Channel 5 later adjusted to 5A)

The advent of aggregation, takeover by WIN Television and the clearance of VHF Band II saw SDQ4 change its call-sign to RTQ and broadcast frequency changed to Channel 42.

Here is a brief preview ahead of the launch of SDQ4, published in TV Times:

They moved in late 2014 (they also started using a similar style Nine News desk when they moved into the ABC building).

There’s still one piece of WIN signage left at the old site, that being the car park sign (which is now barely visible as overgrown trees have mostly covered it up now ).

Interesting to hear that Southern Cross are making the move also this year. Expect to see a full on-air presentation relaunch with this.

Especially if there’s an affiliation change which occurs at some time during the year… anything is looking possible really.

SDQ 4 Another station that was placed on the future FM band. What a mess that turned out to be; allocation TV channels 3, 4 and 5 on the international band.

I still remember holidays in the country with my parents, and wondering why I could tune into TV stations via our car’s FM radio.

Great days they were. Unless, of course, you were trying to allocate more FM radio stations.

I remember listening to NBN Television in Newcastle in the car. Those were the good ol’ days.

I remember hearing FM radio on my old big wood TV as a kid.
