General TV History

The commemorative opening to ACA on Friday reminded me of a bit of fun from 30th Logies

Was that 1988? I remember that year they had a montage of weather presenters… done to the song There’s Weathermen Everywhere ( to the tune of I’ve Been Everywhere)

Yes 11 March 1988 - there was also a Wild World of Sounds montage

I’ll upload it now

that’s the one.

And just spotted what looks like a younger Mike Larkan at 0:03, I guess from Capital Television in Canberra at the time? And for Melbourne viewers there’s Malcolm Gray from Seven, Rob Gell at Nine and Julie Foster at Ten. I think Julie was just a fill-in after Rob Gell left Ten and they’d yet to find a permanent replacement who I guess was David Brown.

Foster and Gray were both journalists. Gray had come through the ranks of GLV10, ATV0 and then as a reporter and sometimes newsreader at HSV7. He definitely took on the ‘wacky weatherman’ persona which was a hit with viewers and Seven apparently saw ratings spike at the second half of the bulletin, seemingly tuning in for the weather. He was another victim of the Fairfax purge at HSV but his exit was a lot quieter than Mal Walden’s.

It’d be good if the ABC TV went to a bit of an effort for their 60th.

I’d like to see a few clocks and good old fashioned continuity announcements

and a few old idents like this one (my personal fave)

…though I don’t see that kind of thing happening, considering the amount of technical crap they’d have to do in order to get it done.

Agreed. My personal favourite series of idents have to be these ones…

Thanks @Zampakid for the upload.

With TCN 9 having it’s 60th birthday the other day and seeing they actually aired old ID’s, although with new voiceovers, it’d be great to see more stations (both metro and regional) do that for major anniversaries.

Ten did do live Saturday games in their second deal sometimes, but for the most part, was a one hour delay. C7 on Optus had regular Live Saturday games between 96 and 01, so it had been done before, at least on pay tv.

My favourite era and an idea I hope the ABC one day revisits. The atmosphere of these idents is so quintessentially Australian, especially the ones with a more outback feel to them. Really emotive, simple and timeless.

I hope so too!

The Bush Tea ident is from The Late Show DVD, isn’t it?

Yes. Laughter continues on over the ident. Followed by the bird doco. Hahaha.

I thought I had erased this from memory. What the fuck were Nine thinking?

“Geez, this sounds like a really good idea. It will rate its socks off for sure! Should be around for many years to come”.:sleeping::yum:

I agree - Mark Ferguson really shouldn’t be anchoring a news bulletin.
