We used to have a thread in the old forum for historical TV ratings. Not sure if we have it now.

Anyway, here’s a snapshot of TV ratings in July 1979 as reported in The Age Green Guide. Unusual in that era to get this amount of detail. Even weekly ratings reports were rare until well into the 1980s.

That’s a great find. I had always believed that the news lead in wasn’t really a consideration until at least the mid 1980s when Perfect Match was thumping everything its path and causing concern because Eyewitness News was suddenly gaining a strong following at 6pm. Those old sitcoms they used to schedule at 6pm in the '70s weren’t the random, filler content I had always believed them to be.

And for Channel 10 (or 0, at least), some things change but some things stay the same… poor rating news and struggling to hit the 20 per cent mark had it not been for one show (Prisoner). Could probably say the same in 2019 with MasterChef? :stuck_out_tongue:

Also take note of the single digit ratings (2) for one of 0’s 7.30pm show, Family At War.

I think Dukes of Hazzard must’ve warmed up and garnered a following over time. It was popular amongst the kids at my school and stuck around in the schedule for a few years.

In 2012 it was very difficult to watch any news program in full HD on the commercial channels. This is because the HD channels were reserved for the “digital multichannels” ie 7mate, GEM and ONE HD.

However during the London 2012 Olympics, Gem was almost an HD simulcast of the Nine main channel. News updates were shown in HD and IIRC only one 6pm bulletin was shown in HD (the night after the opening ceremony).

Anyway, some caps for the vault. Nine News update Monday 6 August 2012 8:12am AEST.

(It is clear that the graphics were only ever SD)

Promo endtag.

I seem to recall that TCN’s supers became HD (even on the SD channel, they became noticeably clearer) sometime after the launch of Nine News at 7pm on GEM in 2013.

Aside from those played out after News Updates, most Nine News/ACA/Today Promos didn’t become HD until mid-2016 IIRC.

I’m guessing early 2000s (maybe 2001?) based upon the ad for Optus Cable having a 300MB download limit, and not getting referred to as Optus@Home.

Thursday 20th of February fell in 1997. This seems to fit best.

I think this was discussed in the ‘Sunrise’ thread a couple of months ago. I have a few questions regarding this, can someone provide some context please? I’d say it’s from 2004.

Not sure what context can be given, was just trying to become the Number 1 show (I’m not sure if they were yet by then, they were certainly gaining fast if they weren’t) and were trying to be different from TODAY. Pretty sure it was 2004 as it is Kochie there and Chris Reason was there until he got sick in 2003.

I think this was also around the time where they did The Intern (I think that’s what they called it) which was like a mock of Trumps Apprentice and where Sunrise had several people doing challenges to win the role of The Intern. It only lasted a couple of weeks as people complained, in the end that was how Edwina Bartholomew came to be with Seven as she was one of the competitors on there.

Today was incredibly stuffy and stale, with minimal change in format since the late 80s / early 90s by the time the mid 2000s hit.

Sunrise won a lot of viewers and eventually became #1 because of this sort of thing, even though it’s a bit perpexling looking back on it in hindsight.

Thanks for the information.

Was not sure whether it was an extended version of a promo airing at the time or just something did on the show, must have been the latter.

They knew the meme was coming! Also, i’m unsure if this is real or a joke mockup…
