I argee with you. The X Ten was very classy in it time. TV Ten Australia was woeful.

And for SEQ viewers it was the first ever Ten logo and was associated with a localised ident. From the first night.

Not sure why they would spend a fortune on rebranding just for the Olympic roman numerals. Seems a rather tenuous link?

My guess is that the Olympics were a much bigger deal in the 80’s, especially surrounding the success of LA. It would have made sense to bring that flavour into your branding. Just my opinion looking back…

They may have hoped that it would gain legs and become long term, but the X was definitely designed/inspired as an Olympic tie in. There were also discussions with Ten and regionals about incorporating the X into their own logos during the Olympics, but none of the regionals would have a bar of it, except of course Capital, who were already obliged.
Despite it looking good, I think 10 might have regretted it, as many commentators did disparagingly call it “channel X”

Probably why they changed it to 10 TV Australia in 1989 so they wouldn’t be mistaken for a porn channel.

You people do realise TEN-10 used “X” as part of their logo long before they ever had broadcast rights to an Olympic Games?

I don’t know why people associate roman numerals solely with the Olympics. They were used at the end of just about every television show and movie and were very common on clocks and watches until a couple of decades ago.

I don’t think the design around the 1970s era Ten logo is meant to represent barbed wire.

Ten’s Sydney’s longest-running logo - 1969-1983.

Their current logo has eclipsed that.

It’s had a few tweaks here and there, but it’sbasically still the same as it was launched in 1990 (?)

The ‘ten’ logo was unveiled in 1990 but not officially used until 1991.

I liked the map element and the city branding. I was into maps and stuff and just took an instant like to it. It was the first Aussie TV I saw.

To me, the Roman font was classy and nicely executed, and the music a nice short, sharp tune (that sounded great extended into Movie and news opens as well). Eyewitness News just looked very polished to me also.

Mine too. Probably my favourite retro Australian television logo. Pity it was only used in Sydney. Have a soft spot for the old colourful Seven logo, also.

I actually think that 10 TV Australia logo is TENs best logo, despite being the 2nd shortest lived one, and the current one is their worst, despite being the one in use the longest.

I was always surprised that ATV didn’t pick up the birds nest “TEN” logo when it converted to 10 in 1980 given that every other network had gone with standardised network logos. I suppose the channel’s ownership was still under a cloud in the transition from Ansett to Murdoch and maybe there was hesitation to mimic the Sydney logo. And the rounded “square” shape of the “10” logo adopted probably made an easy transition from the “0” logo that was of a similar shape?

well it wouldn’t be until 1984 that ATV adopted the same logo as that of Ten Sydney.

Such a shame that they gave up this show.
