General News Events - Coverage Discussion

From overhyping events like the cyclone.

Yes that plays a big part of it. The recent Cyclone was mostly affecting Brisbane and Gold Coast which is a massive population (3rd and 6th largest cities in Australia) and also located in a metropolitan television market so therefore more resources and money can be poured into covering the weather event.

The most recent flooding was mostly contained to Regional areas where the local television stations don’t have as many resources and money and Sydney television newsrooms are thinking.. well it’s not Sydney so who cares. Coverage isn’t going to be as full on.

Another factor is a lot of newsrooms/broadcasters have overspent their budgets (especially with the federal election) and can’t get a renewal of funds until the financial year, so when a weather event hits is also part of the equation.

Just happening now:

Incident at Northland Shopping Centre in Melbourne.

3AW Football has paused their talk and are now covering.

No details, other than many Police etc and lockdowns underway. Reports of people with guns and/or knives, unknown if real or fake.

Updated

Apparently a Nine News helicopter, as well as PolAir, over the scene now, might have some vision or details filter through soon.

A Maccas worker, Jensen, called into 3AW saying a fight broke out in the food court and there were Police running up and down and they were locked down in their back office waiting to receive an all clear. Apparently no formal alarms or centre evacuation, though other reports said everyone in the stores were running out after one another. Also said they saw/believed there were indeed knives and that someone had been stabbed.

Another caller before him was locked down in Target, saying they believed there was still an active situation, but couldn’t see or didn’t know anything more, also waiting for further instructions.

Hoping it’s a false alarm and everyone is okay :crossed_fingers:

Unfortunately this now seems to becoming the norm. Record floods and storms seem to be so common these days.

Nah

Tuned into the ABC expecting them to ditch the Landline repeat for a full bulletin - ended up having a short mention in an update, then into Landline.

This has only just popped up on News.com.au now and it started a 1hr ago.

Fair point, however, I would thought they would’ve at least been able to run some form of bulletin, even as filler until they got more information/footage.

Mentioned in lastest news update/promo for 6pm

There was no mention for a fair while, I think it was mainly due to the whole thing being so chaotic and everyone wanting clarity around what was going on. The only converge was 3AW. But at the time even that was just what they had and a lot of repeating the same information.

ABC broke into programming on the news channel to show Police Press Conference with Auslan interoperation. Lorna Dunkey fronted it.

Leading on 10, and crossed to Sam Mills live on at the scene.

For the non NRL States

The initial reports sounded more sinister and scary, luckily it didn’t turn out that way thank God, still unacceptable though and one is in a serious condition (be it perpetrator or innocent civilian).

And this is why it’s important not to rush to air. There’s a reason they don’t dump their schedule straight away. They wait until there’s substantial information first. This would be why the ABC News Channel didn’t rush to air at 3:30pm.

Tbh I thought it sounded very chaotic. It was pretty much they knew it was bad, but no one really knew how bad or had a clear answer for what was going on.

News outlets and ‘mummy blogger’ warned over mushroom trial coverage

Several news outlets including the ABC and Crikey, as well as a popular ‘mummy blogger’, have had to amend their online coverage of Erin Patterson’s mushroom murder trial, following suppression order breaches or inappropriate commentary.

Think this originally aired in The Australian, which said 10 and Mamamia had also been warned about it’s reporting online.
