Gender

Yes - it’s a day to remember ALL who served our country, along with our allies, which is why I strongly believed it shouldn’t be politicised like it is being done so in this thread.

Probably not the best example of inclusion - for a long time it depended in what theatre of war you saw action as to whether your service was commemorated.

If you (generally, not directed at OP) cannot spot any significant disadvantage that women face today, you’re either not looking hard enough or you’re part of the problem.

We live in an age where a first world country has chosen to remove choice from women’s health because a group of old fogies think that their chosen sky fairy doesn’t permit it.

My comment was in an Australian context (I thought that was implied but clearly not, so I have made that more explicit)- of course even here we still have plenty of room for improvement (as these things don’t happen overnight).

The United States under the current administration on the other hand is a perfect case study of why as a society we must reject any attempt to backslide on gender equality (and part of that is including young men in the conversation and providing them with positive role models to counteract the efforts of scumbags like Tate)- the rate at which things are unravelling over there in regard to women’s rights (and rights in general) is quite alarming.

Just a few things I don’t have to worry about as a man in Australia is paying for tampons when I have my period (women are already $200 worse off a year than men for just being female) and being worried I might be killed on a walk with my dog early in the morning and night.

I am acutely aware that there remain things that as a man I am very fortunate to not have to experience (and those are two good examples you have provided) as I thought I made quite clear on my next line.

Seeing as we’re at the point of selectively quoting people here and trying and distort their words (and the context they are provided in) instead of actually talking about the topic at hand, I might have to leave it there sadly.

Probably easier to contain discussion around Australian issues as America is its own fucked up thing , not to mention other societies still in the Stone Age.

Yes. My initial comments were referring to mostly Australia - but can apply to most developed/progressive countries (America is another can of worms)

I hope words like these help people to stop and think about the “bathroom debate”, because this politician clearly had never thought this far ahead.

Forcing trans people to use the bathroom that corresponds to their birth sex also means trans men (bio females who now present as men) using women’s bathrooms.

If anybody on MS is pro-bathroom debate I’m genuinely curious to hear and exchange thoughts.

What’s really annoying this wasn’t the purpose of the definition of the Supreme Court.

I can assure you from parents I personally know - outside educators have walked into Grade 3 classrooms in Vic State schools and given the kids an earful on gender ideology lies and given graphic presentations, greatly distressing the kids. The next day there is a line up outside the Principal’s offices of rightfully angry parents asking “Please explain”.

And it’s not just State Schools. The State Govt is to blame, but the Feds are helping them.

Again gender a biology is not related. Gender is a social construct and the government has legislated for this by allocating trans people to identify the way they wish on government issued documents. So your ideas and ideologies have no place in Australia.

WHO GIVES AN ACTUAL F? No mainstream Average Joe is raging everyday about wokeism and gender theory when they’re dealing with getting on with lives.

Well said.

As a father, this sort of stuff did used to irk me when it came to my kids. And the preachers at church used to stir us up with their anti-woke, anti-LGBTQIA+, anti-trans agenda suggesting that the ‘cultural marxists’ were taking over and it was all a massive conspiracy and attack on the family and conservative values.

It’s taken me a while to realise… and even this election result has helped me understand…

The anti-woke people try and stir up ‘hysteria’ where there is none. Who cares if the library at the local high school has an LGBTQIA+ display once a year. If my daughter likes boys, then that’s they way she is and no library display or ‘outside educator’ is going to change that.

Even though I voted LNP, I think this election result has helped me understand, these hysterical anti-woke freaks like ‘freedom has a voice’ are no longer worth listening to.

Glad you’ve come around.

Personally I don’t give a rats behind . As long as you are a nice person and are happy then transitioning to a different gender is none of my business. If you want to transition and become a male or female then that is your right.

I always feel with these sorts of issues the nah brigade have done much more damage to those who are purposefully being picked on. Just look at how gender and transitioning has become a right wing religious weapon in the US.

From Mediaweek

This opinion piece from The Australian’s Stephen Rice details an impending landmark Federal Court case that could redefine the legal meaning of “woman” in Australia.

Despite it’s significance, Rice claims most major outlets aren’t touching it.

Tickle v Giggle centres on whether sex is binary or a spectrum, a position backed by Equality Australia and not challenged by the Sex Discrimination Commissioner. The outcome could reshape laws around female-only spaces.

Jinkx Monsoon, drag queen and actress, had a pretty solid response to being questioned about J.K. Rowling (not specifically about her anti-trans rhetoric, an unrelated question):

“That is not a feminine name in the slightest. I know that oftentimes, female authors use initials so that people assume it’s a male writer.

I have to presume that J.K. Rowling was unsatisfied with the way that the world saw her, and then she transitioned herself into a new personality so that the world would perceive her the way she wanted to be perceived.”

Anybody who’s seen the video, her slurry speaking is an intentional callback to her Judy Garland impression.

The Age / SMH has a report on Tickle v Giggle tonight.

Take a look at the self-harm and suicide statistics among LGBTQIA+ youth. According to a 2019 study by LGBTQ+ charity The Trevor Project:

LGBTQ youth who had at least one accepting adult in their life were 40% less likely to report a suicide attempt in the past year.
Nearly 80% of youth surveyed said they had come out to at least one adult, and of those, 79% reported that at least one adult was accepting.
In contrast, over 25% of LGBTQ youth with no accepting adults in their life attempted suicide in the past year, compared to 17% of those with at least one supportive adult.

As a trans person, I don’t just read these numbers—I’ve lived them. I know how profoundly important it is to have even one adult who accepts you for who you are. And I know the damage that can be done when that support isn’t there.

When the political right claims to “care about children” or says “all lives are sacred,” their actions often contradict those words—especially once a child is actually born. Cuts to school lunches, healthcare, and social programs affect all kids, but LGBTQ youth are especially vulnerable when they grow up in environments where they aren’t accepted or protected.

This kind of rhetoric and policymaking alienates people—particularly younger generations, many of whom are part of the LGBTQ community or have close friends and loved ones who are. When young people hear politicians pushing anti-LGBT talking points on TV, they don’t picture some vague or exaggerated stereotype like a “bearded man in a dress”—they see themselves, their friends, their classmates, their siblings under attack.

And in Australia, Millennials and Gen Z now make up the largest voting bloc. Politicians on the right seem to forget that. They’re not just attacking a “culture”—they’re turning away the very generations they need to engage if they want a political future.
