World class performing arts returns to ABC TV on Saturday afternoons – from the blockbuster Beethoven’s Ninth to the international cello-sensation Abel Selaocoe, who brings a kaleidoscope of rhythm and sound to his Australian debut with the Australian Chamber Orchestra.

Episode 1 of 6: This week, Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony performed by the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra. After eight symphonies, Beethoven took his Ninth to a whole new level by composing the biggest symphony in existence at that time.

With severe hearing loss by this point, Beethoven’s landmark feat for choir and orchestra is best known for its epic finale of Ode to Joy. A star-studded line-up of soloists join the MSO, MSO Chorus and the 2024 Auslan Choir for this rousing performance.

Will be a full season three or just specials?

Celebrate 50 years of classical music on our national airwaves in this musical love letter to ABC Classic radio by the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra.

Led by Principal Guest Conductor Benjamin Northey, this program proudly features all-Australian works from composers including Elena Kats-Chernin, Nigel Westlake, Ross Edwards, Peter Sculthorpe and Ella Macens, alongside a beautiful selection of Australian artists that will take you o all
parts of our Country, highlighting the important role ABC Classic has played over the last 50 years.

How’s this going to work in Victoria I wonder? The VFL is now on from 12pm-3pm every Saturday. They should have moved this to Sunday arvos after Gardening Australia. That’s when arts programmes used to air on the ABC.

SATURDAY 13 JUNE 2.30PM

Chief Conductor Umberto Clerici leads Queensland Symphony Orchestra, Brisbane Chamber Choir Collective and four outstanding soloists in a powerful performance of Giuseppe Verdi’s Requiem.

Composed in 1874 this monumental work blends operatic intensity with sacred tradition. The Requiem journeys through grief, judgement and redemption with dramatic force and emotional depth.

With massed voices and orchestra united, this impassioned performance showcases the scale, beauty and enduring power of one of classical music’s most extraordinary masterpieces.

The ABC has released the schedule for June 6. This is for Victoria.

I think that actually they’ve moved it to 3pm? That mso 50 years of abc classic is the first episode of Front row. They just didn’t call it front row for some reason?? Cos if you scroll up and read episode 1’s description it is that same concert. Wonder what time the network will line back up..

Yes the 3pm broadcast in Victoria is the same as other markets just 30 minute later.

The network will line up at 6pm, Victoria missing the repeat of previous week’s episode of Landline.

From the Sydney Opera House Concert Hall, Maestro Long Yu conducts the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra in a thrilling concert featuring acclaimed cellist Jian Wang, performing Tchaikovsky and Rachmaninov.
Founded in 1879, the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra is one of the earliest and best-known orchestral ensembles of its kind in Asia.

In 2026, Maestro Long Yu conducts the orchestra in its much-anticipated Sydney Opera House return, featuring acclaimed cellist Jian Wang. This thrilling concert includes Elliot Leung Selections from ‘Chinese Kitchen: A Feast of Flavours’, Tchaikovsky’s Rococo Variations Theme and Rachmaninov’s Symphony no. 2.

SATURDAY 27 JUNE 2.30PM

From its iconic opening to its triumphant finale, Ludwig van Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony remains one of the most electrifying works in the orchestral repertoire, building from tension to a radiant sense of victory.

Also in the program, is Restless Oceansby Anna Clyne, inspired by Audre Lorde’s poem A Woman Speaks, a striking contemporary piece exploring strength and defiance. And Swedish soprano Camilla Tillingmakes her Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra debut in Gustav Mahler’s Rückert Lieder, a beautifully expressive song cycle of intimacy and emotion.
