Despite or because of the rolling coverage of The Queen’s death, it was sport that was the dominant feature of Friday night primetime.

AFL again reached 800,000 to help give Seven another +40% share while Nine was buoyed by Rugby League finals. Bumping AFL off the main channel in Brisbane, however, probably impacted the AFL numbers.

Seven was down 1 from last week with ABC News channel up 1.6 points which saw ABC’s share up 1.4 . Nine was up slightly , 10 and SBS were down slightly.

At 6pm numbers were up on a usual Friday bulletin where Seven won all markets except Sydney.

Earlier in the day Sunrise and Today both broke through the 300k mark to post their highest audiences of the year. For Today it was the show’s highest audience since 2017.

Not sure if all of the coding seen are correct; will have to wait for final adjustments.

After most regular programming was pre-empted for rolling coverage of the Queen’s death, Seven still posted a big audience for its coverage of AFL semi-final. It did OK in Brisbane given it aired on 7mate. The FTA audience was up on last year’s Friday night semi-final (Geelong v GWS) which pulled 698,000.

I think the regular bulletin was replaced by the two hour special hosted by Sarah Ferguson and David Speers, which came in 17th.

Hardly any interest at all in the rolling coverage. Interesting. People just aren’t watching FTA no matter what is being shown.

The AFL did very well for Seven/ 7Mate. The NRL did well in Sydney.

As for the rolling coverage of The Queen’s death. Sunrise and Today did better than usual - as that’s when people found out of the news. The extended parts of Sunrise and Today did well too, both making the top 20 (assuming its for the 9am-12pm segment?). The rest of the day’s rolling coverage failed to make an impact on the ratings.

10’s primetime coverage failed to do anything.

I can’t sit down for hours on end watching the rolling coverage. I think everyone got the news via Breakfast TV, but after that, it’s really just repeat information on steroids. I mean I can turn the TV on today its just royal expert, after royal expert, then continued live crosses after crosses. The Royal fans will be glued, but that’s just the 1%. The next time I tune in will be the funeral.

I think that part of the issue is that “these days” people are sick of bad news. They take it in initially but don’t want to have to watch it over and over again.

Agree, the rolling coverage was overkill. Its not like say a major flood or bushfire where it’s a developing situation… You die and that’s it (pretty much).

A special 1-2 hr daytine bulletin would have been enough and then back to regular programming.

Sometimes, rolling coverage of all day is just too much.

I understand both Sunrise and Today extending their coverage as the news did happen in the morning. Today extended (14th place) and Sunrise extended (16th place) showed that people did watch. But after midday, people switched off.

Having extended 6pm News and a special in primetime would be enough. And extended news updates. Usually ABC News would have bigger ratings/shares for big stories like this…

12-5am live is just ridiculous. Keep that stuff for ABC News. Who exactly is the target market? Shift workers? Those diehard fans would have already watched probably from 6am-midnight.

Big win to Sunrise in Brisbane. That’s a turnaround.

Completely agree. Nobody wants to watch rolling coverage which is just made up od repetitive interviews and profiles of her life.

It’s different when there’s a disaster and you need rolling coverage to see the developments but there is not much else happening here throughout the day. And whatever is happening with the King Charles can be covered in news bulletins at night and morning.

It’s obvious people don’t care as much as the networks think. Although even I thought the news would rate a lot better. Both 7 and 9 have scheduled a heap of documentaries about the Queen next week too which I expect to absolutely tank now.

I didn’t watch any TV at all during the day but The Project had a 2-hour special edition which seemed to present a good wrap up of the day’s events and tributes, but then when Ten went on to a doco about the Queen I thought, while I am very sad about the Queen I didn’t need to watch more.

Somewhat ignorant comment.

The Queen’s passing is of enormous historical importance and what is unfolding is a huge news story. The networks are covering the story.

But viewers are not watching it.

The daytime coverage seemed pointless to me given its overnight in the UK.
But imo the 10pm coverage onward was great because actual events were happening in the UK.

These will now be running in overdrive for at least the next year. They will be fillers galore for the foreseeable future.

She’s been dead just over a day and the reaction hasbeen pretty meh. Doubt there’ll be much of a market for volumes of Lizzy shows.

Don’t have a problem with what Seven did (i.e; simulcasting Sky News) since that ensures any significant events/developments are covered. However, thought Nine doing their own coverage overnight was puzzling considering how few viewers would be watching during those hours.
