Friday was a big night for footy fans no matter what the code. Seven’s AFL coverage secured the network a rare 40% share with last night’s close game the number one show of the night. The 5-city audience of 784,000 compared to last year’s equivalent game when 868,000 tuned in (there was no NRL final that night). Though the Melbourne audience was higher than last year, Syndey and Perth were well down.

Meanwhile Nine managed +28% for the first qualifying final with an audience of 567,000, up on 507k for the 2022 game . Main channel coverage in Melbourne failed to grab much interest as the home team was held scoreless. The Brisbane audience was up 100k year-on-year while Syndey was down 60k without a local team.

ABC, 10 and SBS were uncompetitive against the sporting coverage.

Better Homes and Gardens did well with its second best audience of the year while Gardening Australia was down 50k from the previous Friday.

Earlier, Seven and Nine News were closer than usual while there was a huge audience for Sunrise, one of its best for the year.

Foxtel got some good numbers though both codes down on last year (AFL had 359k and NRL had 314k).

Huge audience for BH&G in Melbourne (albeit only first 30min), beating Nine News and very nearly one Seven News.

That sandwich in-between news and AFL with both the lead-out and lead-in shows top-raters, it’s become one of the most strategic FTA timeslots over the past 11 years.

Nine Melbourne - 31k on the main channel for the NRL final.

Seven Sydney - 87k on the main channel for the AFL final.

AFL seems to be the winner here.

Big Melbourne audience for the AFL finals for the second night in a row.

10 really not doing themselves any favours by running dead on Fridays now, any momentum gained by launching Locations will be lost.

A few things here I think helped the AFl. Firstly Sydney Swans were playing so it got a boost in the Sydney numbers. For the NRL even though the Melbourne Storm were playing so was a Melbourne team in the AFl so naturally Victorians are going to watch the AFL regardless if the Storm are playing in the NRL. Still very good numbers for the NRL given no Sydney teams were playing last night.

Agree, tonight’s NRL.numbers should be higher since two Sydney teams are playing.

And conversely, AFL numbers should be lower tonight in Melbourne since no Victorian teams are playing.

It’s also on the main channel in Melbourne. It will be interesting to see if more than 10k tune in.

Perhaps the score board has some impact as well - a close result in AFL and a blow out in NRL with The Storm never looking to be a chance.

No VOZ number available since yesterday.

Swans didn’t start particularly well, in fact held to just one goal for the first half I think, so over 1 hour until they started improving significantly booting 5 successive goals in the third quarter. So had Swans been very competitive or in front from very early on, Sydney’s rating could’ve also been even higher, maybe cracking triple digits.

Or AFL seems to be more popular in Sydney than NRL is in Melbourne?

Well yes, more ex pat VICs living in Sydney than the other way around.

Haha… nah they usually go to QLD.

I think there is definitely some of that in Sydney too.

Why would you say the Storm were “never looking to be a chance” because it is was very close at half time.

It wasn’t until after the 53rd minute that the Broncos started to run with it.

Really?

There has been massive net migration from NSW to Vic this century. How do you think Melbourne’s population is growing past Sydney’s?

Ultimately aus football is far bigger in Sydney and particularly Brisbane than rugby league is south of the barassi line.

Melbourne Storm have a lot of soft support amongst AFL fans in Melbourne. That’s why they would get far more for a reg season game when there is no AFL on than they got for a qual final up against an AFL elimination final

Overseas immigration. And boundary changes!

That’s a big number for Sunrise in Brisbane yesterday.
