Nine secured its best Friday share of the year including a massive 14.2% for 9Gem where The Ashes was broadcast in the three east coast markets. Nine’s main channel that was a mix of NRL and cricket was also number one just ahead of Seven’s. The result was up from the 40.2% Nine scored from the Friday night of the first test two weeks before.

Seven’s share was its lowest Friday since the start of the AFL season with 10 managing a third place, down two from the previous week and ahead of ABC that had its lowest Friday share of the year. It was SBS’s second-lowest Friday.

With a big night of sport, The Ashes session one topped the sport rankings. AFL ranked 13th for its lowest Friday night result of the year though it was the number one sport in Melbourne 2,000 ahead of the cricket. Friday night NRL was also down on its season average including just 30,000 in Melbourne where it was shown on the main channel, one sixth of the AFL and Ashes audiences. The game, however, was the number one sport in Brisbane and just 3,000 behind the cricket in Sydney. Overall, the second test numbers were up on those of the first day of the first test two Fridays ago.

None of 10’s programs made the top 20 including the debut of Location, Location, Location that was up 40k on the previous week’s timeslot result while ABC’s Gardening Australia was down slightly on its usual numbers. Seven’s Better Homes and Gardens was the top prime time entertainment show.

Conversely, only 30,000 Sydney viewers saw the AFL clash between the Swans and the Cats ending in a draw.

NRL playing on the main channel in Melbourne was complete disaster last night. Ouch…

Seven had this playing on 7mate last night in Sydney?

I don’t think that is a fair comparison as the AFL in Sydney was on 7Mate while the NRL in Melbourne was on Nine’s main channel.

The Ashes has really taken a big dent out of the AFL and NRL audiences. There is a lot of crossover in the fan bases.

Shows that Australia’s game is really Cricket and how dumb Seven and CA are for giving into Fox and placing the summer sport behind the paywall!!

The next Ashes rights Nine will want to secure asap, cause Seven/Ten surly be looking at this, and thinking we want those ratings!

Modest start to the show, couldn’t have expected more than that really given what had been occupying the timeslot and what it was up against with live sports etc.

How did it fare in the demos? Any better than Bondi Rescue?

It’ll only get more cluttered the next month or so, with Women’s World Cup, Tour de France, as well as more SOO, cricket and tennis. Not to mention AFL and NRL of course. And other sports too such as RU.

Makes you wonder why Nine essentially dropped cricket and went after tennis (domestic summer) in the first place, I’ve always been of the belief it was never pure ratings based and looking at interviews with Nine and MW, TVT, media. IIRC it was based around commercial/financials & ROI and also more even demographics (particularly gender as well as youngest) and that Q1 launch pad.

Nine weren’t exactly secretive about it at the time - they weren’t happy with the scheduling and the weather really impacted their commercial agreements.

Good to see 10’s Location Location premiere up from last weeks Bondi Rescue, up against the Ashes, AFL and NRL. Wasn’t expecting the biggest numbers, but its a modest start.

ABC’s post 8.30pm shows seem to let down their shares in recent times.

It’s all well and good to blame CA (and there is a lot to hold them to account for), but it’s clear that in order to shift the deal you not only have to put up the money but also offer something compelling too.

That said, I’m unconvinced that giving the rights to FTA without Fox (say to Nine) will substantially change what’s behind the paywall, all it does is change who operates the paywall

It’s a stupid comment to say Australia’s game is cricket because the figures for the Big Bash didn’t exactly set the world on fire

It’s more of “Australia’s game” from a ratings perspective on a national level than any other team-ball sport.

I think we can all agree that you’ve had your fair share of them over the past 6 months.

That decision for GTV last night was bizarre, in-turn hurt both cricket’s audiences and Nine’s shares (except for 9Gem although perhaps somewhat negligible due to Sydney and Brisbane anyway), as well as seeing AFL pip Ashes (surely would’ve been opposite if not going off recent nights). I wonder if it was an NRL request? And/or to try to better promote/expose/reach Victorian audiences? And maybe also given Seven air far more Swans and Lions games on their main channel in those local markets?
Throwing Wimbledon into the mix next week will be interesting to see both decision and results wise.

Would have to be? Putting cricket on the main channel should have been a no-brainer.

The only other thing i can think of is whether Nine thought their network share would be higher in that more people in Melbourne would go channel surfing for the cricket than they would for the NRL, but by that logic MAFS should then be on 9Rush!

:joy::rofl::joy::rofl::joy:. Google show me an answer that clearly doesn’t understand basic numbers, and what has been said about cricket for over 40yrs!

I agree, but getting off topic, it always helps when you have a person working for Murdoch and CA while doing TV rights for the said sport organisation.

Ratings however for the cricket have been great for Nine, however in Adelaide they have brought no traction to their news service.

The Adelaide news is in a really bad place at the moment, with no light at the end of the tunnel.

Surely 7 and 10 should’ve thought that after last time because it essentially gave 9 it’s first annual win in years!
