A similar result to the previous Friday in network shares last night; Seven with its third consecutive Friday over 40% and a rare +30% share for the main channel, the only time this year on a Friday.

Numbers for the AFL were even with the previous week, with the game featuring on Seven’s main channel in Brisbane and very competitive with the NRL despite the blow out result and loss for the local team.

For the fifth night this week, the 6.30pm portion of Seven News outrated the 6pm half hour while Nine News slipped under 700,000.

The NRL, also featuring a one-sided game was down 100k from the previous Friday.

ABC lost share week-on-week as ABC News Channel’s numbers were back to their average while 10 edged up slightly but still ranked fourth as The Project made a rare Friday appearance in the top 20.

Better Homes and Gardens was the top primetime entertainment show while Sunrise made the top 20 in what was a slightly better week for breakfast TV.

Another good night for Seven with the AFL.

A Current Affair made the top 20 in the multi-channel list - where it aired in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane due to the NRL Finals airing on the main channel.

The FTA and pay TV figures for the AFL preliminary final were well down on last year (which also featured a blow out result).

21k for the NRL final match on the main channel in Melbourne. :man_facepalming:

Absolute disaster.

It was never going to get meaningful numbers with AFL in direct competition on the main channel.

Tonight will be interesting with no overlap in AFL (4.45pm) and NRL (8pm) games.

But the AFL got more on the 7 mate in Sydney than the NRL got in Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth combined presumably all but Perth on the main channel. The NRL only got 5 times the AFL on 7 mate in Sydney

Why the AFL gets the big bucks.

If tonight’s AFL is close at all I suspect it might go close to a record prelim audience (including streaming)

I don’t think whether it’s on the main channel or multi channel makes that much difference with sports ratings, if people want to watch it, they will regardless of where it is.

The 4.45pm time slot won’t help with tonight’s AFL ratings, no doubt it will do very well, but I’d be surprised if it breaks records when it’s up against 6pm News etc on other channels.

Last year Melbourne was in lockdown and people couldnt watch the game at bars/clubs etc. Also 77,000 fans who were at the ground last night would have been watching on TV instead.

I think I it’s clear though… the NRL finals shouldn’t be on main channel in Melbourne, unless the Storm is playing or the NRL grand final.

It’s a financial loss for Nine and it’s also damaging the Nine News brand in Melbourne this week.

Im not saying it should be on the main channel.

I can only think Nine have an agreement with the NRL to air the NRL Finals live on the main channel in Melbourne regardless of ratings.

Did the new deal rights kick in this year for Nine?

No, it may have been the last rights deal included “from 2022”… i don’t really know why.

Such a pity a rare, poignant ACA television moment with Tracey recounting her emotional experience watching mourners pay their respects inside Westminster Hall was relegated to multi-channel viewing on the east coast. There’s no reason football couldn’t have started at the normal time.

Agree, there’s too much pre and post game on both AFL and NRL coverages.

Possibly reactive from Nine considering Seven’s recent Friday / AFL Finals ratings / shares? Not sure it did much though.

I also agree. The pre-match segment for a normal Friday night game starts at 7.30pm for a 7.55pm kick-off. The length of that pre match segment is more than enough time to read out the team listings and say who’s injured etc.

But for some reason for the Finals Series, the pre-match starts at 7pm for a 7.50pm kick off. That’s 50 minutes of waffle.

A Current Affair should have just stayed on the main channel and not shafted to 9Gem.

I didn’t realise it was shafted to 9GEM just thought it wasn’t on because of footy.

Just a reminder that the same thing is scheduled for ACA tonight Saturday - 9Gem in markets with NRL on the main channel.

It makes some difference, even if less than other programming. Casual viewers are less likely to stumble across it and there are still some oldies who don’t venture to the multis

I am pretty sure the recent record was the bulldogs versus the giants game in 2016 which was also twilight (second prelim generally is). Sydney v Collingwood could easily challenge it if it’s a close game
