Friday was a tale of three football codes as AFL, NRL and soccer featured in the overnights. AFL helped Seven to its first Friday win in three weeks with a nine-point victory over Nine. Nine’s share was its lowest Friday of the NRL season.

The Matildas soccer friendly on 10 Bold saw that channel outrate 10 and ABC’s main channels for a network share that was 10’s best Friday since January 2021. It the highest share recorded since the start of 10 Bold branding. Prior to that it is the highest since the 2014 Commonwealth Games for a 10 multichannel. Meanwhile sport on SBS with the Tour de France help lift its network share by three not far off fourth-placed ABC that was steady.

At 6pm it was very close between Seven and Nine’s bulletins with Nine’s overtook Seven’s at 6.30 – very rare for this year. The result included a big win for Georgie Gardner in Sydney while Seven’s Brisbane bulletin had one of its lowest results of the year. At 7pm A Current Affair was 80k ahead of ABC News.

The close result in the AFL featuring main channel coverage in Brisbane delivered the best Friday game number in seven weeks. Better Homes and Gardens was the top prime time entertainment show, slightly down on the previous week but only the third episode to top 400k this year.

NRL on Nine was up from the previous week’s low but was one of the lowest results for the year. The NRL was outrated by the Matildas game on 10 Bold with almost 300k metro viewers. The Brisbane results were interesting with NRL on 73k, AFL 65k and Football 62k.

ABC’s First Weapons suffered a 70k drop for its second episode on ABC.

A battle of the Football Codes indeed.

Pretty impressive numbers for the Matildas Friendly over on 10Bold. Makes you think what their World Cup matches will do over on Seven from next Thursday onwards.

ABC’s First Weapons not doing so well. But then again, neither did 10’s Location, Location, Location, which is a shame.

I caught some of the “news bulletin” last night, and by half-past they were commenting on how dishwasher tablets have gone up in price.

Last nights selection really felt like it was contractual and the ratings pretty well confirm it. As much as I think that FTA access needs to be equitable, the NRL could do with a few more stronger games on the platform.

I don’t think Melbourne is entirely a lost cause. NRL does have a support base in Melbourne. The State Of Origin the other night still got 178,000 in Melbourne for NSW v Queensland.

You’re constantly contradicting yourself. You keep saying yhat Ten need to show more sport to improve their ratings. Now you’re wondering why Nine are persisting with sport. They’ve paid for it so why not screen it in all markets? Why waste more money on an additional program for one market?

Considering it was the last game before a home World Cup, France being the #5 country in FIFA’s rankings and it was played in front of 50,000 people, the Matildas game should have aired on the main channel.

Ten should definitely attach itself to a sport - soccer

Many people said soccer would never work on Ten then the Matilda’s rate higher than the main channel :laughing:

Think about why though. Location Location Location was never really going to be Masterchef-level of compelling viewing on a Friday night no less.

If Masterchef was on 10 during a weeknight then there’s no way Bold would outrate the main channel like it did last night.

It is a good point you make. 10 have struggled for a while with their Friday night line-up, so it isn’t a huge surprise that the Matildas game outrated it. I would agree with Jeffminster that the game should have been on the main channel, I think there was enough interest in the game to drive the audience up just a bit more.

You have to think of the context surrounding it though. There is far more interest in international football in Australia than there is in the A-Leagues. You have a strong Matildas team facing the #5 nation in France, its the “send-off” game before a home World Cup which I believe they have a decent shot of winning. There is an interest factor from fans who don’t normally watch football building and I think the games will do well for Seven over the next few weeks.

The problems I see with the A-League are:

  1. Lack of overall media coverage. You’ll be lucky to see much coverage of the A-League in most mainstream media outside of the final scores or when something bad happens at one of the games.
  2. Tribalism in Australian football. Many football fans in Australia are not Australian football fans, they are fans of European clubs. There is this great divide between the two groups that the A-League has a hard time closing and has done for many years.

I’m not saying that football can’t work on Ten, but they are facing a very steep uphill climb to make it work.
