DAZN Group Completes Acquisition of Foxtel, Strengthening Global Sports Streaming Leadership

DAZN, the world’s leading sports entertainment platform, today announced the completion of its acquisition of Foxtel Group, marking a major milestone in its expansion into the Australian market.

Foxtel Group, Australia’s premier subscription television provider, will continue to operate as a standalone business while benefiting from the UK-based DAZN’s global reach, market-leading technology, and investment in sports entertainment innovation.

Foxtel, Kayo Sports, BINGE, and Hubbl will retain their brand identities, continuing to produce the world-class programming, sports coverage and entertainment that Australians know and love.

Shay Segev, CEO of DAZN, said: “This is an exciting day for DAZN and Foxtel Group and a significant milestone for DAZN as we expand our global footprint into Australia, a key sports market with passionate fans. Foxtel’s strong local presence, combined with DAZN’s global scale, technology, and content rights, will unlock incredible opportunities for sports fans, advertisers, and partners, while continuing to deliver great drama, lifestyle and news content.”

Patrick Delany, CEO of Foxtel Group, said: “DAZN’s ownership allows the Foxtel Group to remain an Australian-based business, with an Australian team and the sport, drama and entertainment that Australians love. As part of DAZN, we now benefit from their global scale, their leading technology platform and their track-record in innovation that will allow us to more effectively compete with the global streaming giants.

“A big part of what drives us at Foxtel is bringing the best sports and the best sports production to our subscribers. We now have the opportunity to take the AFL and NRL, our two largest and most iconic Australian sports, to a massive global audience. For our Australian subscribers, it creates the opportunity to enjoy even more of the world’s best sports.”

The integration process will be phased, ensuring a seamless transition for employees, partners, and customers. Foxtel will be known as “a DAZN Company,” reinforcing its connection to a global leader in sports entertainment.

So much for December 2025?

DAZN got the money quicker than expected to do the deal? And News Corp wanted out?

Saudi money must have dropped into the bank accounts.

I’d be intrigued to know whether the brands Australians “know and love” will remain long term or if that’s just market-soothing corporate speak.

Probably

I thought it was always 2nd half of fiscal 2025, so now (well, I expected June but I guess now counts).

So, WatchAFL and WatchNRL to switch over to the DAZN platform, like NFL Game Pass and FIBA Courtside 1891 for international users. I’d guess that’ll be for offseason, when it’d be easier to transfer customers across.

Hear me out: Maybe they’ll change Foxtel to something like FXTL because eff vowels :joy:

Kayo would fit just fine under this logic, less so for Binge (BNGE?) or Hubbl (HUBL?)…

I can see Binge being sold to WBD, now that Max has launched in Aus.

Not sure whether Hubbl will continue.

DAZN are most likely using this purchase as a launch pad for expanding its sports streaming service into Aus.

FOXTEL Networks, including Binge and its production arm, would be a strong strategic fit for Nine Entertainment. The format rights could be split between 9Now or Stan, depending on genre, while FOXTEL’s existing channel brands could be converted into Nine-branded FAST channels on 9Now. Additionally, if DAZN were to incorporate FOXTEL’s existing streaming deals with Max, Netflix, and Disney+ etc, it could position Stan as a bundled streaming service, making it more competitive and easier to market.

Foxtel have a production arm?

So how do we pronounce DAZN?

I’ve seen online that it is supposed to be “Da-Zone” with the intention being to convey the idea of being “in the zone”.

But there are a lot of mispronunciations out there like daz-own, daz-en and day-zen.

Da-Zone

Wonder how long until we see DAZN’s streaming channels (like Boxing TV or PDC Darts) on the Foxtel / Kayo platform (asusming the rights allow this)

Yep that’s it. I had been reading it as “Daz-en” in my head but was talking to someone on the weekend that works for Foxtel. She said they have had it described to them as the name being like a play on In the Zone, you are in “Da Zone”.

And people say LiSTNR is stupid….

Yes, FOXTEL Originals (Selling Houses Australia, The Great Australian Bake-Off etc.)

Foxtel themselves don’t have their own production arm though, they have a commissioning team and likely some network EP’s who oversee the various shows they commission across the business.

Selling Houses Australia is produced by Warner Bros. International Television Production Australia, and The Great Australian Bake Off is from BBC Studios Productions Australia - both for Foxtel/BINGE.
