Using that theory nothing would ever be built in regional or rural Australia…
I take a slightly different view here. If Foxtel can negotiate with Optus for a commercial agreement for satellite capacity why not. It benefits’ all parties doesn’t it? Optus get Satellite utilization, Foxtel retain (and potentially grow with FTA switch-off’s like Mildura) subscriber numbers and the end user gets a product that works reliably.
Whilst I suspect Foxtel have signaled their intention to be a streamer rather than a broadcaster, if you were a potential Foxtel new owner, it certainly give you a point of difference to other subscription services…and potentially dollars.
You may not realise the popularity of Foxtel’s sporting channels in rural areas (especially Fox League in country NSW and Queensland). Pubs and clubs in these areas rely on live sport to pull in customers especially on Friday nights and on weekends.
Remember during the cricket and AFL rights, Fox and Murdoch were saying; “you can’t pick Ten cause they’ll be sold and you’ll have no idea who will pick them”
Well, well, well, this is showing how stupid these sporting organisations are.
