Foxtel

Max is Q2 2025 for Asia. 2025 for Australia.

From what I know Max may share some content with Foxtel/Binge in AU and Sky in UK when the service goes live in those two stragteic markets

Yeah thought so, but it’s allocated as a “Fox Sports” show on there while the rest run as “Fox Footy”…

All will end up on Foxtel I reckon.

What do you mean all?

And they both have an output deal with Disney too, that they signed in Feb last year.

With Disney changing their tack, and understanding they also needed to be prevalent on FTV.

If you mean the apps on Hubbl and the later model Foxtel IQ STB’s then most likely. But that’s as far as it goes.

Wow so Binge actually didn’t grow at all.

That’s very troubling considering their marketing spends

They need to do a Disney+Hulu+Max and bundle with Stan

Their March 23 numbers seem to be pretty well close to their best numbers so far - I suspect they may have hit a ceiling with their current offering. It’s worth noting as well that in 12 months since those numbers, they’ve also upped prices too (as has Kayo, but the economics are different for it IMO)

Wait to see what the numbers look like once they factor in Hubbl and the new bundling. I suspect that might see some improvement.

Kayo’s downfall is still Summer - the Cricket clearly doesn’t interest a decent cohort of their winter subscribers.

I’m surprised Foxtel haven’t either beefed up Binge’s movie library or introduced a movies add-on to take advantage of the agreements they have with the various major film studios. It’s the missing component in their streaming strategy.

What would a “movie add-on” achieve? No other streamers have that and Foxtel probably aren’t looking at doing another Presto by separating TV and movies.

I’d argue Binge’s movie library is great, but it’s non-exclusive. Almost every major movie Binge gets, another streamer gets that same day. Three of the biggest films of last year; Barbie, Oppenheimer and Mario, launched on Binge and Netflix the same day. And the user experience on Netflix blows Binge out of the water.

Binge not promoting their movie selection doesn’t help either. I don’t think their “original” film The Royal Hotel got any promotion from Binge last year. It had a quiet run in theaters via Transmission Films, then dumped on Binge.

My line of thinking was more if Foxtel didn’t want to create a separate SVOD service for movies. It’s something Sky’s Now TV service does whereby entertainment and movies are sold as separate packages.

If NowTV can make it work then good on them, but they’re going against the grain there. They also launched with them as seperate packages. Binge has been around for 4 years with TV and movies together. Separating them is a sure way to piss everyone off.

Netflix and Amazon Prime don’t promote their (cinema-released) movie selection either. These movies are added very quietly without any fanfare at all when it comes to the SVOD window.

this is the same as the music store boom of the late 90’s and early 00’s. every man and his dog had a music store thinking it was easy money. the market became saturated and eventually we settled on a few major players.

its why netflix worked so well - they had so much content that you only needed netflix.

my prediction is this -

unless you have niche content like sport (for example the mlb network) everything will consolidate to a max of 3 large players. it will take a few years, but people don’t have the money to have multiple subscriptions and running these services is expensive

TV Blackbox has learned that BBC content-filled channels BBC Earth, BBC News, CBeebies, and BBC First – along with all programming available as video on demand (VOD) – will be removed from all Foxtel and BINGE platforms from 31 July.

As dicussed in the BBC News thread, seemed expected that BBC News was exiting the platform.

Seems like Foxtel’s really beginning to fall apart - the upcoming renewal of the HBO deal may be a make or break point for them.
