let’s hope so, I don’t want to pay top dollar for a separate HBO Max service just so I can stream HBO/WB content!

Only a matter of time though.

WBD has $50b in debt

Launching another direct to consumer streamer in the relatively small market of Oz may not be a money making venture

Selling programming to Foxtel makes them $200m a year

Can see why they favor the status quo

The rights are more likely to go to another streamer than be withdrawn so HBO Max can launch

You’d have to think Fox will be trying hard to retain it though, losing it would put a decent hole in their premium content offerings

Dont forget theres also discovery +

Same thing I guess - I know WBD eventually decided to keep Discovery+, but for entertainment stuff that’s relevant to Foxtel, HBO Max would be their main platform.

Although it’s a possibility, I suspect everyone’s spooked by Disney’s intent to move everything onto their own platform - other companies may have different driving factors.

Particularly, especially when Netflix has enough of the market at the pointy end, whether people in a market like Australia, and not as used to the premium model of HBO and (US) Showtime etc, will pay upwards of AU$15-20 a month for another premium streamer, rather than a fairly healthy number of subscribers at a per-sub rate they’d likely get from continuing to sell to Foxtel (inclusive of Binge, of course).

I was hoping to see them lose this content deal. It would’ve been good to see them suffer a little in the marketplace.

Discovery+ will not launch in Australia for the forseeable future. Adding TNT Sports to its sports portfolio next as part of the deal is likely.

TNT Sports will be the merged BT/Eurosport UK entity though, won’t it? AFAIK Eurosport will still exist as a brand outside of the UK after that time meaning the return of the APAC feed of Eurosport is the only possibility for Foxtel.
