The Americans

From Wednesday April 18 at 8.30pm AEST

THE AMERICANS, the award-winning drama about the complex marriage of two KGB spies posing as Americans during the Cold War, returns for its sixth and final season from Wednesday, April 18 at 8.30pm AEST – streamed on Foxtel Now and seen on Foxtel’s showcase, the new home of FX Originals.

In this action-packed final season of THE AMERICANS, the arranged marriage of Philip (Matthew Rhys) and Elizabeth Jennings (Keri Russell) grows more passionate and genuine by the day, but as the pressures and demands of the job grow heavier, the personal toll becomes almost too exhausting to bear. Having revealed their true identities to their teenage daughter Paige (Holly Taylor), Philip and Elizabeth’s ability to protect their cover and their family’s safety deteriorates. After a particularly fraught mission, Philip and Elizabeth decide to end their tour and take their family home to Russia.

However, a game-changing development in one of their ongoing cases forces them to abandon those plans for the sake of the motherland. Now, Paige delves deeper into the family business, even as Philip takes a step back from it, and the Jennings struggle to maintain a smokescreen of normalcy, especially around their son, Henry (Keidrich Sellati), who remains blissfully ignorant of the spies in his midst. Their neighbour and Philip’s best friend, FBI Agent Stan Beeman (Noah Emmerich), has also yet to discover their true identities. Although he’s transferred divisions, Stan remains their greatest threat since his friend and former partner, Agent Dennis Aderholt (Brandon J. Dirden), leads the force tasked with uncovering the Soviet Illegals hiding in plain sight.

With Gorbachev in power in the Soviet Union, the winds of change are sweeping through both Russia and America, creating new perils. A growing rift within the KGB draws disillusioned former officer Oleg Burov (Costa Ronin) back into the fray, and may set Philip and Elizabeth on opposing sides as the Cold War reaches its boiling point.

The sixth and final season of THE AMERICANS premieres on Wednesday April 18 at 8.30pm and can be seen on showcase or streamed On Demand on internet-connected iQ set-top-boxes and on streaming service Foxtel Now.

My Brilliant Friend

Foxtel today announced the acquisition of HBO’s new drama My Brilliant Friend, an eight-part series based on Elena Ferrante’s internationally bestselling novel of the same name.

Set to premiere on Foxtel in 2019, My Brilliant Friend is based on the first book in Ferrante’s four-part series of novels, which trace the friendship of two girls, Elena and Lila, in postwar Naples.

With production on My Brilliant Friend currently underway in Caserta, Italy, casting for the series took place over a period of eight months, with almost 9,000 children and 500 adults from all over Campania auditioning.

Newcomers Elisa Del Genio and Ludovica Nasti were chosen to portray the two lead roles of Elena and Lila as young children. As production on the series progresses, these young actors will give way to two teenage actors, Margherita Mazzucco (Elena) and Gaia Girace (Lila). In total, My Brilliant Friend is expected to include a cast of more than 150 actors and 5,000 extras.

The series tells the story of Elena Greco, a now-elderly woman who discovers the most important friend in her life, Raffaella ‘Lila’ Cerullo, has disappeared without a trace. A writer, immersed in a house full of books, Greco turns on her computer and starts writing the story of their tempestuous friendship, stating from the point when Elena met Lila in their first year of school in 1950.

Set in a dangerous and fascinating Naples, their story goes on to cover more than 60 years of their lives, as she tries to describe the mystery of Lila, Elena’s brilliant friend and – in a way – her best friend and worst enemy.

My Brilliant Friend is an HBO, RAI FICTION and TIMVISION series, produced by Lorenzo Mieli and Mario Gianani for Wildside and by Domenico Procacci for Fandango, in co-production with Umedia Production.

The eight-part series will stream on Foxtel and screen on showcase in 2019.

Showtime has renewed The Affair for a fifth and final season. The fourth season is currently showing on Showcase.

Why?! There’s no story left. Hasn’t been for two seasons. Showtime continues to drag shows on for two seasons too long: Weeds, Homeland etc.
