The talk of an extended deal predates covid, which indicates that the NRL are reasonably happy with the current arrangement
Im sceptical about how much interest the likes of Amazon and Facebook have in Australian sport - we know that both the AFL and NRL had meetings in the states, but it went very quiet very quickly after. DAZN to me was the only real contender in the mix
No question itâs a massive boost for the NRL - Fox are locked in to a deal at the absolute heights of what sports rights will be worth - in a world where theyâd have to make it profitable on Kayo rather than in an $80 a month Foxtel bundle.
Thereâs no way on the Pay side anyone would be anywhere near the numbers Fox will be paying. The competition, if it exists, will be on the FTA side. Taking Foxâs money now while they are still solvent, and lining up as a creditor for when they arenât, is the correct move for the sport.
The NRL extending the Fox deal now gives them long-term financial stability which is what the league desperately needs right now. However, it feels like theyâve made the same mistake as they did with the previous rights deal by dealing with one aspect of the rights separately to the other. It means unless Nine also eventually extends their deal, the NRL will be hamstrung in terms of the rights they can offer to 10 and/or Seven as part of the next FTA rights deal
One interesting aspect of Foxtelâs extension of its NRL broadcast rights deal is that Foxtel deciding to not make its digital rights available on mobile beyond 2022, meaning the sport may no longer be available on Telstraâs Live Pass, according to SMH.
âWe are⌠disappointed to learn the NRL through their agreement with Foxtel has decided not to make those digital rights on mobile available beyond 2022,â a Telstra spokesman said. âWe have not been a party to those discussions and will obviously need to engage with the NRL to understand what the implications are for our partnership in the long term.â
This could see Telstra continuing as a naming rights sponsor of the NRL competition beyond 2022, but a rival like Optus or another streaming platform picking up the digital rights.

This is why sports leagues/competitions shouldnât deal with different aspects of the rights separately (unless theyâre divided into clear packages like the NFL) - you end up with problems like this
Would it simply be the same as Telstra now (with the live-pass/NRL app) if TPG/Optus were to get the rights, or would Optus be able to stream Fox/Nine/Whoeverâs coverage on Optus Sport on Fetch/OS app, as it is a streaming only service?
Probably not - it seems like they donât want to make their games available through the NRL app (in the same way you can now only stream State of Origin & the GF through 9Now).
interestingly - Fox AFL are ripping off the story, and claiming that âAFL have an oppurtinity to get ahead of the packâ - ignoring Fox NRL come up with concept thats attracting massive overseas interest.
Mabey. But arenât digital rights normally done separately to tv rights? I would be surprised if the NRL suddenly said no to making the NRL available via its app and online. It would be madness considering its the main source to overseas viewers.
I presume that international rights would be separate. Telstraâs Live-Pass only works in Australia and New Zealand (I believe), and the NRL .com/NRL app rights work internationally.
The NRL has some stupid money making scheme where people pay to have a cardboard cutout of themselves placed in the stand as a pretend crowd. Of course, people pranked the system and submitted photos of notable people, and of people other than themselves, with some getting through as the company making the cutouts is incompetent.
Fox Sports and serial boofhead Matthew Johns made fun of the cutouts by superimposing Adolf Hitlerâs image onto one of the cutouts during Johnsâ show.
The full story appears to be, is that Foxtel has been on-selling streaming rights to Telstra, but under the extended agreement with the NRL Foxtel is not allowed to on-sell those rights from 2023 (though they can still keep the rights themselves for Foxtel Now and Kayo). It is believed it is because the NRL is hoping it will help in forthcoming negotiations with Nine to extend their deal which would include streaming on 9Now, as Nine is apparently not happy with Telstraâs current arrangement.
