Fox Cricket

Kayo Freebies:roll_eyes::roll_eyes::roll_eyes:. No casual fan seeks out that service. Only dedicated fans would sign up to project that on a smart tv. These sports like netball that have signed up for this as their free to air are not exposing their product to new fans or casual fans. I’m sorry but the women’s World Cup won’t get much more coverage being on freebies.

It’s not even a promoted service.

(I agree)

Ah, but you see, “Nine didn’t want it” and now “Fox is our saviour by bringing this to the public”.

Disagree - the anti-siphoning list definitely still has a purpose (see how little sport is aired on FTA in the UK and NZ if you want to understand why). It’s just it’s not a foolproof mechanism/protection and there are ways to get around the spirit of it.

It’s really no different at all to people subscribing to Disney+ or Netflix to see a new show that they want to watch.

I’m sure cricket fans are capable of streaming.

Just as an aside, NZ tends to cope alright without most sport on FTA. Not really a major here, perhaps a condition of it happening for so long.

How does it still have a purpose when the barrier for protection is so poor that we’ve seen Foxtel multiple times now get around it?

There is zero reporting around compliance against the list and the Communications Minister only seems to be accountable for it when someone feels like it - it was considered extremely vital that protections were legislated, so if it’s so important that the provisions are retained, then treat it like other “vital” protections (like counting the number of minutes of local content a regional broadcaster puts out) and require the regulator to report on it.

If FTA are genuinely disinterested in some of the events that are listed, then have them delisted and maintain the list to reflect the events that the FTA networks are genuinely interested in. Another option is to adopt the key difference between Australia and the UK’s lists - allowing for certain sports to be highlights only on free-to-air (while not ideal, it offers an alternate coverage method - the UK have also limited the number of events where there is a requirement to cover part of an event too)

Its starting to look like we only retain the list so a few people get a warm fuzzy feeling about a level of protectionism towards a single form of media that seems to be still rooted in old-media thinking.

I actually agree with most of the suggestions you outlined - especially how there needs to be some level of compliance enforcement and reporting. Cricket Australia, Fox & Seven should have never been allowed to have gotten away with what they did so that Fox would have exclusive rights to limited overs cricket. When the Communications Minister decided not to take action about that, it predictably opened a can of worms whereby Fox probably now doesn’t have to do much to convince they complied with the ‘spirit’ of the anti-siphoning rules (the Women’s World Cup is likely a good example of that but we need more info about how that played out).

In regards to your initial question, the anti-siphoning rules still have a purpose because it ensures most sports events/games which have significant national importance can be viewed by the majority of the population. Is it a perfect system? Hell no - as you highlighted, there are plenty of aspects where reforms are required. However, it’s pretty certain that a lot of things that currently air on FTA wouldn’t be if the anti-siphoning rules didn’t exist.

Pakistan super league is on Fox Sports in the schedule for the 28/1/22 on 505 at 1:30am good to see they might have picked up some Pakistan rights hopefully more.

So that would most likely lock in the Pakistan tour in March.

Australia was missing when the PCB announced a number of international broadcast rights recently.

Surprised nothing from Stan/9, they already had the Rugby Union market tied up when they announced the 6 nation deal. This would have been a better buy IMO.

Fox doing their own coverage for the Ashes Test.
Jones, Guha and Price opening.

Are fox using their own cameras or are they sharing cameras with seven.

If it’s not in 4k then seven are probably doing it.

Brenton Speed, Alex Blackwell and Erin Osborne also in the team.

Yes, they are using the reverse of the Men’s Test arrangement. They are taking Seven’s world feed video, with a couple of their own cameras at the ground as well.

From the little bit I saw, Seven’s boundary transition graphics are coming through to Fox too

The same thing happens with BBL games when Seven are the host broadcaster.
