Achingly powerful, Four Years follows the turbulent marriage oftwo young Indian lovers, Sridevi and Yash, through three timelines, told through dual perspectives. Full of romance and the desire to find someone you once loved again, this ground-breaking Australian series uses the Hindi and English languages interchangeably.

Created and written by Indian-Australian writer Mithila Gupta (Bump S1&2, The Unlisted, The Heights, Five Bedrooms and Doctor Doctor).

Four Years will be produced by award-winning Easy Tiger Productions (Colin From Accounts, The Twelve) for SBS. Major production investment from Screen Australia and Screen NSW in association with SBS.

Filming Begins on SBS’ Romantic Original Drama ‘Four Years Later’ in India

SBS is proud to announce that cameras are now rolling on FOUR YEARS LATER – SBS’ first foray into an Original scripted series to be filmed across two countries, told in dual languages. A romance that delves into the complex ways love can change over time and distance, the new eight-part series for SBS shoots in Mumbai and Jaipur, before moving to Sydney in late February.

FOUR YEARS LATER (*previously, Four Years) explores the love story of Sridevi and Yash, who have to endure four years apart right after their wedding when Yash lands a medical traineeship in Australia.

The series follows Yash and Sridevi’s turbulent time apart and reconnection – two timelines, two worlds, told through dual perspectives and explores themes of the changing nature of love, intimacy and belonging as you change within yourself and asks what it takes to find your way back to someone you have deeply loved after so long apart.

Using both Hindi and English languages, the ground-breaking Australian series features two highly accomplished Indian actors in the lead roles – Akshay Ajit Singh (24: India) playing Yash and award-winning actress Shahana Goswami (Bombay Begums, A Suitable Boy) as Sridevi.

Created by Mithila Gupta (Five Bedrooms, Bump) and featuring a writing team all with South Asian heritage: Mithila, Nicole Reddy and S. Shakthidharan, the series is being directed by Mohini Herse (the SBS Digital Original Appetite) and Fadia Abboud (Year Of, Five Bedrooms).

From Easy Tiger the producers of The Twelve and Colin from Accounts and created by Mithila Gupta comes Four Years Later, SBS’s brand new Original romantic drama series, premiering Wednesday 2 October on SBS and SBS on Demand, with double episodes to air at 9.20pm on SBS each Wednesday.

Set across the two vastly different worlds of India and Australia, this intimate and compelling eight-part series delves into the complex ways love can change over time and distance.

Four Years Later stars award-winning actress Shahana Goswami (Bombay Begums, A Suitable Boy) and Akshay Ajit Singh (24: India), as Sridevi and Yash, who must endure four years apart right after their wedding when Yash lands a highly coveted medical traineeship in Australia.Supporting cast includes Kate Box (Deadloch, SBS’s Erotic Stories), Taj Aldeeb (The Fall), Roy Joseph (Five Bedrooms, Strife) and Luke Arnold (Scrublands, True Colours).

Told through dual perspectives, Four Years Later is a deeply human and relatable love story about the changing nature of love, intimacy, longing, familial duty and belonging. Using both Hindi and English languages, and filmed in Mumbai, Jaipur and Sydney, this ground-breaking Australian series uncovers the complex realities of Yash and Sri’s long-distance relationship and their reconnection after four years apart, as the two lovers’ turbulent marriage struggles to survive the test of time and distance and they try to find their way back to each other.

Arriving in Australia from India after four long years apart from her husband she adores, Sridevi carries with her expectations of a fantasy reunion. Leaving behind bustling Jaipur, she is introduced to their new Australian home of sun and sand, but the picture Yash has painted of his life here does not match the reality. While he has struggled to fit into this new homeland, Sridevi begins to thrive, shaking off her identity as ‘dutiful housewife’ and discovering a whole new world of deeper purpose, independence and freedom. Along for the ride is her new friend Gabs (Kate Box), a confident, free-spirited Aussie she meets who offers Sridevi a new world view.

Discovering that a lot has happened to both in those intervening years, they each uncover a web of lies and false promises that threaten the undeniable passion and devotion they have for one another.

Four Years Later will be subtitled in seven languages, streaming on SBS On Demand in Arabic, Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, Korean, Vietnamese, Hindi and Punjabi. All eight episodes will also be available with audio description.

Episode Three:
Yash takes Sridevi on a surprise date to a waterhole in the Australian wilderness. It is romantic and passionate, but when Sridevi says she wants to start a family, Yash reacts badly.

Episode Four:
With the new resolve to tell no more lies, Sridevi decides it is time to confess her own secret, which threatens to end their already rocky relationship.

Synopses for the series premiere next Wednesday

Episode One:
Sridevi and Yash meet, fall in love and get married. But when Yash discovers he has been granted a medical traineeship in Australia, they are forced to live apart.

Episode Two:
As Yash leaves India for his medial traineeship in Australia, Sridevi is left at home with his family and the hopes for her future on hold. Four years later, Sridevi arrives in Australia.

Each episode is 35 minutes long including ad breaks.
