Four Corners

It’s quite obvious that Four Corners used to be a fairly light current affairs series before moving into the hard hitting stuff that it’s known for today in the 1980s.

How is it obvious?

Four Corners in the 1960s

Just weeks after its debut, viewers were shown the shocking living conditions in an Aboriginal settlement at Box Ridge. The government was inundated with complaints over the poverty exposed by the program.

They weren’t just discovering each other, but the rest of the world, as foreign reporting became a hallmark of the program. Its reporters took viewers behind the Iron Curtain, and to war-torn Vietnam.

It may have had some extremely hard hitting stories interspersed throughout the program, but there definitely were segments done on a lighter note which you definitely would not see on the Four Corners of today.

Fox and the Big Lie: How the network promoted Donald Trump’s propaganda and helped destabilise democracy in America

Monday 23 August at 8.30pm

Fox and the Big Lie: A two-part special on Rupert Murdoch’s Fox News - how the network promoted Donald Trump’s propaganda and helped destabilise democracy in America

“The United States of America gave Rupert Murdoch a great deal, he repaid it by doing a great deal of harm.” Lt. Colonel Ralph Peters, former Fox contributor

Fox News is the brash cable TV network that has dominated both the ratings and the headlines in America, delivering revenue and power to the Murdoch family empire. For decades its catch cry was “fair and balanced.” Then along came Donald Trump.

“I think that they allowed the former president to dictate what news they put out to the American people.” Gretchen Carlson, former Fox News host

On Monday, Four Corners investigates how the Murdoch run Fox News became a propaganda vehicle for Donald Trump and helped destabilise democracy in the United States. Featuring Fox News insiders, the program reveals how the network changed once Donald Trump entered politics and Rupert Murdoch took over.

“I was under the false belief that…the Murdochs’ would elevate the value of news…They were not there to make Fox more mainstream. Quite the opposite.” Chris Stirewalt, former Fox political editor

In interviews with major Fox figures including Gretchen Carlson, the presenter who brought down famed network boss Roger Ailes; and former Fox political editor Chris Stirewalt, a key figure on the Decision Desk whose election night call triggered a Trump meltdown - the program examines the politics at work within the network and why it tied its fortunes to Donald Trump.

“This is all a money game. This is all about ratings. This is all about the bottom line.” Gretchen Carlson

They fear that this alliance has put the foundations of US democracy in peril.

“Fox certainly has participated in the destruction of democracy by promoting the types of things that Donald Trump did. Now, that’s a pox on Fox. No question about it.” Former Fox chief political correspondent, Carl Cameron

Great to see the most important news item of the day is a news story about the past, with a past president.
Where’s the covid coverage?
Numpties

The Australian never fails to disappoint with their constant obsession with bashing the ABC. Cheap and pathetic attempts at ideological point scoring whilst lying in their hypocrisy.

This Sophie Elsworth person and most of the News Corp hacks are like playground bullies who refuses to admit the inaccuracies in their words and always spark unnecessary debacles and talking points when they mess up the facts.

Pretty much.

Four Corners’ two part special on Fox News could set a dangerous precedent. The general public might start to wonder if News Corp is trying to do something similar here in Australia with their newspapers and Sky News!

I do agree that Sophie has been known for petty, unnecessary tweets, but she might have a point here. How do we not know that the ABC are actually the ones lying? Last nights Four Corners episode was bound to cause a reaction which the ABC might want to protect themselves from by shutting off the comments. If the moderator line is true, surely filling the role of a moderator can’t be that hard?

I don’t think they want to stop it for the sake of stopping it. Perhaps there were some derogatory comments on there and they had to stop it from becoming rampant.

This is from just a week ago - demonstrates her tactics

To suggest otherwise is dishonest on your part and disingenuous to your readers. In fact I can only surmise you are motivated by malice to present my comments as anything other than levity and humour during this challenging time.

Correcting Sophie Elsworth in The Australian

The Australian’s Sophie Elsworth is wrong to claim the ABC is “censoring” social media comments following Monday night’s Four Corners investigation of Fox News, “Fox and The Big Lie”.

Moderating comments on social media is a normal and responsible practice by publishers, including News Corp.

As the ABC has tried to explain to Elsworth, comments were switched off once the livestream had finished and a moderator was no longer available. This is a normal practice and nothing different occurred with this program.

The current moderation framework is a recent development – it was introduced following Facebook’s recent changes around comments. The ABC has not gone back and retrospectively closed every previous post for comments. Also, all posts are assessed on a case by case basis by moderators and social producers.

Comments are only removed if they breach the Terms of Use – for example if they’re misleading and/or abusive. Audience members of course can share Four Corners content on their own pages/profiles and continue the discussion.

They really have thin skins at News Corp and devoted so much coverage to this nonsense.

They really should read Hoax by Brian Stelter and see how much of the four corners is accurate reporting.

The people at the Australian have a bizarre and unhealthy obsession with the ABC.

I just watched the episode. It was fine and well done actually. They just don’t like scrutiny.
