Plans for a “distinctly Australian” style of play for the Socceroos and Matildas that would direct player and coach development appear to have been abandoned by Football Australia amid a dramatic restructure of its executive team.
It comes amid a dramatic turnover of executive staff at FA – headed by the departure of former chief executive James Johnson – which has been described as akin to regime change by several sources within the sport’s administrative ranks.
Of the 14 members of FA’s executive leadership team as listed in the federation’s 2023 annual report, only two remain: commercial boss Tom Rischbieth and ex-Matilda Sarah Walsh, who is heading up the 2026 Women’s Asian Cup organising committee. Last week, Peter Filopoulos, FA’s former media and marketing chief who was closely aligned with Johnson, was also shown the door without public acknowledgement.

The Melbourne Magistrates’ Court heard Danzaki and friend Yuta Hirayama manipulated the yellow card betting market on April 27, May 3 and May 9 this year.
Prosecutor Alex Turner said Hirayama placed bets on matches Danzaki participated in, wagering on him being booked and the total number of yellow cards in the games.
Danzaki and Hirayama will be sentenced on August 22.

Paris Saint-Germain have won their first UEFA Super Cup, beating Tottenham Hotspur 4-3 on penalties. PSG scored two late goals to draw level with the Spurs at the end of 90 minutes in the match at Udine, Italy.

Fun little outcome from the draw is that one of City’s first opponents at home is Buriram… and one of their players is Australian Curtis Good.
Good holds the record for most games played for Melbourne City, and is also honoured with a club award named after him.

Aston Villa may be drawn with Newcastle in a goalless snoozefest, but there is a silver lining.
They are now unbeaten in 22 straight home games across all competitions, closing in on their record of 24 games between 9/1976 and 5/1977.
If they stay unbeaten against Crystal Palace (1/9), Fulham (27/9) and Burnley (4/10), they will break the record.
