FM DX Webservers

Thanks for the feedback. Well that’s weird. I’m guessing the video on changing the tune direction didn’t achieve anything either.

BTW I noticed another weird anomaly on your webserver tonight & I also noted it on the Mildura (but not Perth) webserver. It relates to the SERVER time plugin. It shows correctly in the settings panel, but not on the GUI (when settings panel closed). Local Time & World Time is correct.

The last of the TVCL TEF servers has also gone down now. I’ve been informed that strong winds have knocked the antenna for TVCL3 down and I won’t be able to fix it until I get back in 2 weeks’ time.

It seems the Southerly Buster claims another victim!

As expected, but still a huge shame, not just for me, but also for the whole DXing community. To lose all 3 of your webservers just before Christmas is just heartbreaking, because they’ve been absolutely fantastic webservers, even though your 3rd one had the inverted audio issue which is yet to be permanently fixed.

Oh well, with 2025 starting in around 2 weeks time, looks like we won’t have to wait very long for your webservers to be back online. You could essentially say 2024 was the year the TVCL webservers died.

At least (for now until January) we have @VK3SWL’s Northern Sydney webserver to take care of Sydney DXing. Northern Sydney | VK2SWL - FM-DX Webserver

Here’s a radical idea: if you enjoy DXing so much, why not invest some capital in your own setup? The rewards of getting distant signals under your own steam far outweigh the pleasure derived from remote DXing, imo. Nothing beats hearing Fijian FM stations wafting their way into hot and dry Bungendore. Remote DXing is a complement for me and not a total substitute; remember that what we have now is total luxury. Most DXers started out with phone alerts and very rudimentary equipment, and had to do all the hard work themselves. Even now I have one eye on the VK Spotter and regularly check for DX .

But maybe I’m weird.

seems a bit dramatic. Perhaps take a more positive attitude instead of focusing on the negative

Not trying to be dramatic, but OK then.

The TVCL TEF servers will be back in early 2025 bigger and better - more TEF radios and more yagi antennas. There’ll also be a new non-TEF server, which I’ll provide more details on once I get it up and working when I return in January.

Not at all, I am the same.

And I don’t have to worry that I might be slowing down the experience for someone else if I’m logged onto a remote DX webserver.

And I would prefer to hear about what DX signals one can receive on their own radios since that is more unique.

But also a big THANK YOU to everyone who has set up their own webservers too.

Sportsbet will soon be offering odds on whether an emotional essay will follow when a TEF webserver goes temporarily offline

Once again, thank you for your efforts and to @Rob2144 , @melb_mateyy0 and @ninkeon58 as well for their nodes. All volunteer run and remember, you don’t have to pay a cent.

People can’t be ‘always on’ all the time no matter how much society has moved in that direction ; it’s very bad for mental health. So take whatever time you need @tvcl and enjoy your holiday.

Please find attached a rapidly edited 5GTR logo with transparent background ideal for display on the TEF webservers. Thank you to @melb_mateyy0 for yesterdays heads-up that this SA community radio station now has RDS.

I’ve also just added the station to our Aus/NZ RDS List with a nicely edited logo too. :slightly_smiling_face:

Just letting everyone know my web server will be offline today for a few hours as I have an electrician doing some work in my unit today. Hopefully it will be back on in a few hours.

For those of us that use the time display plugin, I have had to modify the code a little bit to allow manual overrides if your server runs on HTTPS. For reasons unknown the original code calls a non secure API (HTTP) which most modern browsers block due to the potential security risks of allowing it to run. I’ve created my own fork of the original code if anyone would like to try it out

Kinda digging the idea of frequency in bold, I’ve always thought it should stand out more than the signal, and especially more than the PI code. I might steal it :flushed:

What I’ve done is create my own css/styling plugin, instead of directly editing the main files. That way, the changes won’t get lost with updates.

I had already edited a logo for 5GTR, but I suppose people can choose. It’s your choice!

I didn’t know, given station was new to us with RDS.
I had to edit the black variant with clear background for the RDS List.
Did you edit a solid or transparent background variant?

I was thinking of later creating a Google Drive Folder to upload & store those
logos I’ve edited for the webservers for both the RDS stations logos
& non RDS logos, maybe in a folder for each & sub categories of folders for
the different states & station licence types.
Then you can choose which you want in your repository file or others can choose which few logos they prefer. TVCL has a heap of his own too. Might well be more manageable than posting the odd update in this thread. :man_shrugging:
I’m open to thoughts & ideas.

I already have a Google Drive folder(s) for the RDS List logos, created some 18 months ago. It was a necessity due to the way in which Google Sheets & Google Draw work together re sizing of the logos within cells & as storage back-up.

From their website, which they literally just updated, so it’s no longer there. Here’s an archive: http://web.archive.org/web/20241006093807/https://5gtr.net/

Currently I’m storing the logos on my GitHub as you know, but it’s rather monotonous updating the zip file every time, so I keep new ones in a folder there and update the zip every few weeks or so.

Thanks @ninkeon58 I was trying the new Server Time & whilst the time is accurate now (thank you for your hard work) the date is incorrectly displaying the UTC date (previous day) as Friday Dec 20th as I type this at 9am on Sat Dec 21st. Can you fix this?

I was looking at the new font for the frequency. I am probably one for maintaining font types within any given GUI for appearances & whilst I agree having the frequency standout is a good idea, the really bold font looks a little too much, not defined enough, but that’s just my thoughts, others might disagree & that’s fine, we all have our different preferences. I was wondering, as a suggestion, if the frequency might be better with the original font, but done as Bold as a subtle improvement? How would that look? Doesn’t hurt to tinker a little.

All fixed, I’ll push an update later on today to the Github page.

Highpoint has also updated the original with a fixed version which should fix the HTTPS issues.

I’m still going to run my modified version merged with the changes.

As for the UI, I kinda like the bold text

Awesome! Thank you. :sunglasses:

Noted your version of the BOLD frequency display @melb_mateyy0 on your webserver this morning. That looks good. :+1: :sunglasses:

All good. I’m working on a supplemental Google Drive repository to make our lives a bit easier in that respect & provide extra choices.
