From Left - Sarah Walsh, Mark Bosnich, Niav Owens, Richard Bayliss, David Basheer and Craig Foster

As the official broadcaster of the tournament, SBS audiences can catch all the action from Qatar and experience the world-exclusive commentary from the iconic international ‘voice of football’, Martin Tyler, who will join respected football presenters Richard Bayliss and Niav Owens as part of SBS’s exclusive broadcast.

Richard and Niav will host every live match from SBS’s Sydney studios and will also be joined by a number of special guests to share a range of perspectives on each day’s events.

Much-loved Socceroos goalkeeper and Premier League champion, Mark Bosnich , and former Socceroos captain, seasoned broadcaster, and 2022 Australian Father of the Year, Craig Foster AM, will share their trusted analysis and insights.

Former Matilda and Head of Women’s Football at Football Australia, Sarah Walsh , will also be a guest analyst in the studio along with an impressive guest line-up of former football internationals to be unveiled. Exclusive pitch-side tournament coverage and the best access on the ground will come from David Basheer and Matt Connellan .

The SBS broadcast will feature live commentary from inside the stadiums, with David Basheer calling the Socceroos matches, and Martin Tyler will be front and centre for key matches including the opening match and the final.

SBS Director of Sport Ken Shipp said: “FIFA World Cup 2022™ is the event of a generation. SBS has assembled a world-class line up of experts and Australian football royalty to provide their extraordinary insights and knowledge to our premium coverage of the FIFA World Cup™.

Good to read that the commentary team has been announced.

I dont know much about Richard Bayliss nor Niav Owens (hope they’re good), but the others are good.

Good that Mark Bosnich has joined SBS too. He has also appeared on Nine on Sports Sunday at times throughout the year and a good analyst.

Looks like SBS has gone down the freelancer options this time around with no in house broadcasters anymore. They’ve gone for former SBS Chief football analyst Craig Foster to return to the network that he made his name.

Very strangely, they’re not basing the hosting from Qatar. They use to broadcast from the host nation in the past. They clearly have cut costs this time around.

Seems like a pretty decent team they’ve put together. Bosnich and Foster can rub people the wrong way but personally I think they’re good.

It’s a shame the panel won’t be in Qatar but if it keeps costs down and helps keep WC’s wholly on SBS then it’s a small price to pay.

Both Richard Bayliss and Niav Owens have been part of Optus Sport’s football broadcasts since they began. Richard Bayliss had also worked for SBS before joining Optus Sport.

Part of it might be because of the human rights issues surrounding this World Cup. The reason why I say that is it seems clear from the below article that Craig Foster wouldn’t have been involved in SBS’ coverage if it was based in Qatar:

…Foster said he decided to be part of the coverage based in Australia and to donate his fee to the families of the deceased migrant workers.

“I don’t want to go to Qatar and spend my money,” Foster said. “I don’t want to go to Qatar and take happy photos like [Qatar ambassador] David Beckham and say that everything is fine because it’s not fine. So I’ll be working on this World Cup from here in Australia.”

Foster said he was “not prepared to profit from a World Cup that is built on the backs of … dead migrant workers”.

That makes a lot of sense then. Clearly, it is the main reason as SBS have more often than not presented from the host nation. He has been a strong human rights advocate so at least he backs up his position with authenticity.

Yeah the only time I can remember SBS having this little presence on the ground at a World Cup was 2002 Sth Korea/Japan. And that was only because they got the rights to the non-Channel 9 matches a month or two before the tournament.

This is the last rights cycle for SBS. You wonder how much more competitive the rights will be for the next cycle.

With Optus having the women’s next year, it seems that there will be many networks/platforms vying for the rights in the future.

It would be such a shame for SBS not to have the rights. They’ve been outstanding. Last time when they on sold some rights to Optus it was a disaster and they actually had to air all the games.

For the reason you’ve identified, the upcoming FIFA World Cup will sadly probably be SBS’ WC swansong.

If so, it will mark an end of an extraordinary era since unquestionably the popularity of football in Australia wouldn’t be where it is without SBS championing the sport over the past 40+ years - many of those when other networks weren’t interested in it. Their comprehensive World Cup coverage has played a huge part in that.

Yes, the next World cup being hosted in North America will have morning and afternoon live games, so it will be very lucrative for broadcasters. Hopefully SBS will get it in 2026 as they always do a brilliant job with the World Cup, epecially 2014, one of the best World Cups and the coverage was outstanding.

Richard used to be Optus’ Head of Sport and primary presenter and is currently the A-Leagues’ Head of Content.
Niav is a former ABC, Fox, Optus presenter currently alternating with Tara Rushton to present 10’s Football coverage.
Mark last season was a studio analyst alongside Craig for Stan Sport’s coverage of UEFA Champions League, along with both appearing on other Nine properties to talk about sport. Mark also recently joined the 10 team for the preseason friendlies played in Australia. It’s unclear as to who he is working with this season.
David hasn’t really done much since the last World Cup on SBS, while Tyler has of course been commentating for various outlets, mainly on English Premier League and UEFA competitions.
As mentioned Sarah is the Head of Women’s Football at Football Australia, and has done analysis for Optus for the recent UEFA Women’s European Championships.
Matt is currently National Editor, Chief of Staff and Sports Presenter for SBS World News.

2022 FIFA World Cup countdown: One month until kick-off - LIVE and FREE on SBS

WATCH every game of the 2022 FIFA World Cup LIVE and FREE on SBS and SBS On Demand.

The final international window before the World Cup has come and gone and now the focus for all 32 teams is on their opening group games in Qatar this November.

Pressure will be on the coaches as they finalise their 26-player-squads ahead of the November 13 deadline, while players will have their final chances to earn their selection with good form for their club teams.

The squad limit has risen three spots compared to previous tournaments, from 23 to 26, in order to help coaches manage the continued presence of COVID-19.

World Cup officials, together with the World Health Organisation and Qatar, have confirmed a collaborative approach to providing a safer environment for travelling fans who will have greater access than ever before.

Qatar’s small surface area means its eight venues, spread across five host cities, will be entirely within reach on matchdays - making it easier for fans to attend their favourite fixtures.

SBS and SBS On Demand will broadcast all 64 matches exclusively free-to-air to Australian audiences, with eight live games shown simultaneously on SBS VICELAND .

The Socceroos will be in at least three of these fixtures, having been drawn against defending champions France, Denmark and Tunisia in Group D.

In line with previous iterations, the host country will contest the opening match at the 2022 World Cup, with Qatar kicking off Group A against Ecuador on November 21.

‘We All Speak Football’: Contemporary Australia front and centre in multilingual FIFA World Cup 2022™ campaign

SBS this week launches a new advertising campaign ahead of its broadcast of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™, featuring lively, colourful creative spotlighting multiple languages, reflecting the diverse character of contemporary Australia.

The emotive and fan-heavy imagery featured in the campaign, created by SBS’s marketing team, will run across television, SBS On Demand, online, social media, outdoor and print and leans on the multicultural character of SBS’s audience and the ability of football to bring cultures together.

SBS Director of Marketing Jane Palfreyman said: “We’re incredibly proud of this campaign. It connects directly with audiences in-language and shows the common humanity among fans of the game. It’s fun, it’s inclusive and it authentically reflects contemporary Australia. We couldn’t be prouder to be the home of the World Cup.”

The creative key art/video features vibrant images of FIFA World Cup™ fans of different backgrounds, gathered with family and friends and captured mid-reaction. Intimate photography and super slow motion close-up video of fans experiencing the action evokes feelings of anticipation, hope, heartbreak and pride, bringing the ‘We All Speak Football’ concept to life.

The campaign highlights the excitement and social nature of watching a Qatar 2022™ match live, inspiring audiences to tune in the broadcasts and participate in this global sporting spectacle.

The campaign, which will also run across OOH media placements, targets football fanatics, sports fans, multicultural and multilingual communities, and social viewers who want to participate in the excitement and feel part of the global conversation.
