FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023 Coverage

It is a one-off because 7mate in Brisbane is simulcasting Fox Footy’s coverage of AFL match between Fremantle and Brisbane (4.40pm AEST start).

The issue with drawing that conclusion though is Seven airing random non-Australian group stage games without giving them much promotion was always going to result in those games getting poor ratings. It would be a different story though if Seven had rights to the entire WWC and they therefore are promoting the tournament in totality.

I’m a little surprised Seven are even bothering with non-Australian pool games. While the Matildas have got very good ratings, it was always hard to see that projecting out to non-Australian games being successful.

Offsiders raised their ‘disappointment’ that you need a subscription service to view the whole event - realistically the only way you were going to see the whole event on FTA was if SBS had the rights, no commercial network is going to run the whole tournament on FTA (I’m not even convinced a non-SBS FTA broadcaster would show all the games of the men’s WC either FWIW)

Probably Optus required they show other games too. Which is good from them.

Oh shut up Offsiders. Anything they say about football is pure shit. I turn off the TV when they talk about it when they clearly don’t have any knowledge, nor do they do any research about their topics (except for Bruce Djite or Simon Hill of course).

You are exactly right though, no one was going to show all games of any tournament bar SBS or maybe 10 (on Bold).

There is a significant level of irony when Kelli Underwood talks about programming being behind the paywall given she’s also employed by Fox Sports who do exactly this.

cry more. if it was such a big problem then the networks would have paid more than Optus for the rights.

I have seen matches like England vs Denmark, USA vs Netherlands, Sweden vs Italy, Brazil vs France and Germany vs Colombia

Simon Hill in fine form on the world feed, glad FIFA picked him up for the tournament.

There is something comforting about hearing Simon Hill’s voice on commentary

Where to watch the world feed?

Optus Sport

If the Matildas continue their form for the rest of the evening we could be seeing some 40% shares coming for Seven.

The Matildas are through to the Round of 16

Their match will be played next Monday. Another big night for Seven.

Would 7 hold off H&A on Monday, have The Voice finish by 8:10pm (even earlier with less ads) and then have the Matilda’s on the main channel?

You’d think with all the promotion about “every Matilda’s game LIVE on 7” you wouldn’t want it on 7mate.

Not a bad idea. The Matildas’ round of 16 match doesn’t start until 8.30pm AEST. Seven could air The Voice at 7pm followed by a shortened pre-match at 8.10pm.

BTW, 7mate will show the round of 16 clash between Japan and Norway this Saturday (6pm AEST kickoff), according to FIFA website. Online guides has 7mate showing the 3pm AEST game (Switzerland v Spain).

That actually sounds like a good idea. Seven did say every Matildas game live. And they do stuff Home and Away around a fair bit in recent years to show other events (like reality show launches and AFL on some Thursdays).

The Voice at 7pm. Soccer at 8.15pm (pre-match at 7.30pm on 7Mate). Show the players coming out on the field at 8.20pm for the Anthems. Kick off at 8.30pm. This could actually work.

7 advertising it as 7:30pm AEST on 7. So looks like they will have H&A and no Voice
