The only place that I have seen potato cakes on the menu in NSW is about as far south as you can get: Eden. Eden and Merimbula get lots of Mexicans that wish to swim without a wetsuit in summer so this makes sense.
It’s firmly potato scallop in the Canberra region. I’m not sure about what happens in the Riverina and Murray.
The Maccas ™ thing to do would be to buy a few fried potato snacks and insert them into your burger of choice. I do this with hash browns and McMuffins ™
Never heard them called that in SA, has always been potato cake.

Potato cakes / scallops are still the cheapest item you can get at most fish and chip shops.
They are definitely only known as a Potato Cake in Victoria. I’ve only ever come across the Scallop name when interstate.
Regardless of the name I am very interested to try them. Who doesn’t love a Fish and Chip shop potato cake? I’m sure they will be different but I’m ready and keen to find out tomorrow!
I bought these recently from Coles, they were quite good for a bake at home potato cake. So good option if you don’t want to support McDonalds’ anti-Victorian stance.
Meanwhile these are just a mindfuck

It’s Maccas, so it will taste like cardboard.
I live in the south east of South Australia & we here call it potato cake.
I swear I heard the name “potato medallion” once while I was living in Victoria, but I’ve never seen it anywhere else and I’m starting to think it was a fever dream.
ah, those victorians, and their potato cakes, parmas, and savoys. I’ll just sit here and continue eating my potato scallops, parmis, and jatz.
Oh, please try them first then judge them!
From the sounds of it WA can’t decide what to call them
Found this online… seems to explain why some SA member on here refer to them as “Cake”
That’s a potato bake.
