Eurovision Song Contest

Could Delta’s twitter comment have been a bluff? I know that Anthony Callea for example specifically said a few weeks before I’m a Celebrity that he wasn’t going to be on it. Although I guess if Delta was participating you would think she would just ignore any questions/speculation these few days about it rather than do a post specifically saying she isn’t doing it.

It seems very likely to be Dami Im. I have mixed feelings about that. I liked her on X Factor but I’m not sure if she has the personality or style to really grab the European audience. You nee someone fun, energetic and I can see her just doing a ballad. Last year there were so many boring ballads in Eurovision and most of them just got forgotten and didn’t do too well. If they were going the X Factor route I think that Samantha Jade would have been more suitable, she has a lot more pop appeal and feels more Eurovision.

I would be satisfied with Conrad Sewell (or however you spell it). Not a heap of gossip or speculation on him but he would be a great choice in my opinion.

I guess we find out tonight!

Here is the final clue - the forecourt of Sydney Opera House:

The announcement will be broadcast live on SBS’s Facebook page tonight at around 9.40pm AEDT.

Who is currently performing there or has performed? Disney under the Stars- RickiLee? Crowded house? Lol
Kylie has just posted a photo on FB outside the opera house saying she is performing on the harbor tonight.

Would she spoil it like that if it was her?

Probably not. Kylie might do the announcement ??
Tina Arena is also currently performing in Sydney isn’t she?
Gotta say the clues haven’t really been clues about the artist I don’t think. Will have to wait and see.

Conchita Wurst is performing at the Opera House tonight where she will announce the next artist.

Dami Im will be representing Australia this year.

Many people have expected that. Congratulations to her.

Worst kept secret. Not sure about the choice. She’s got a good voice but don’t know whether she has a flair for Eurovision.

fantastic choice, perfect for eurovision. i just hope there is an opportunity for her to show her personality in Europe.

Dami Im to represent Australia at the 2016 Eurovision Song Contest

Song to be released on 11 March

Australian broadcaster, SBS, has announced Dami Im will represent Australia at the Eurovision Song Contest 2016 in Stockholm, Sweden! After Guy Sebastian wowed Europe with a top 5 finish as Australia’s first ever Eurovision contestant in 2015, Australia is back for another dose of Eurovision glitz and glamour, and another shot at Eurovision glory.

Dami was announced on stage tonight by Eurovision 2014 winner, Conchita Wurst, and Australia’s first ever Eurovision contestant Guy Sebastian at the Conchita: From Vienna with Love concert with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, held at the iconic Sydney Opera House. According to SBS:

" We have selected Dami as the perfect artist to capture Europe’s attention with her unique personal style and show-stopping voice; an artist who is ready to showcase our musical talent to the world.

Born in South Korea, Dami moved to Logan Valley, Brisbane, with her family when she was 9. In 2013 Dami stepped into the spotlight from nowhere, taking out the X Factor crown and winning the hearts of over 3 million Australians with her astonishing voice and transformation into a fully-fledged pop diva.

Since then, Dami has earned #1 chart positions and multi-platinum sales for the likes of her self-titled debut album and hit singles Alive, Super Love and Gladiator.

Unlike last year where Australia was a wild card entry straight to the Grand Final, Dami will compete in the second Semi-Final and must get enough votes to go through to the Final.

The perfect artist for Australia

The song Dami will sing on the Eurovision stage will be released worldwide by the 11th of March. Dani Im said:

" I am so thrilled and honoured to be representing Australia at Eurovision this year in Stockholm. I am really excited to be following in the footsteps of Guy Sebastian and Jessica Mauboy who have both graced the Eurovision stage before me. I truly believe that the Australian public and Eurovision fans around the world are going to love the song I will be performing in Sweden. I cannot wait to showcase it to the world and represent Australia to the best of my ability!

SBS Managing Director Michael Ebeid said.

"Australia has embraced the Eurovision spirit for over 30 years on SBS, but we’re a competitive nation, and last year with our very own contestant to cheer for and a chance of winning, Australia was completely captivated by the contest on the other side of the world. Reaching over 4 million Australians, it was our biggest Eurovision audience ever.

We’re thrilled to be welcomed back to the Eurovision family this year, and Dami is the perfect artist to take that next step for Australia on the world’s biggest stage. The essence of the Eurovision Song Contest is about bringing countries together for a celebration of their diversity and culture through music, and it’s that element which resonates so strongly with SBS’s own purpose.

Australian Head of Delegation, Director of Blink TV, SBS’s Eurovision production partner, Paul Clarke said:

"We are delighted to be invited to Sweden, and we feel we couldn’t have a stronger competitor. Dami has huge musical talent, and her story is like a modern Australian fairy-tale. I expect Eurovision 2016 to be a thrilling, page-turning chapter for her, and for Eurovision fans.

Dami’s voice is so powerful and she has a distinctive style that I expect will capture the attention of Europe. I encourage our Eurovision fans across the nation and Europe to really get behind her, and to become the Dami army!

Dami was on Nova this morning with Fitzy and Wippa and revealed she only found it she got the Eurovision gig last week. She has already found the song she will perform and has recorded it.

You would hope that the artist would be selected based on the song. It is a SONG contest afterall. Dami does seem a bit of a surprise / left of centre choice given she’s only had moderate success and her last single Smile was a complete and utter flop.

It’s interesting though that there is a lot of negative reaction on facebook. I’m torn. People seem to think a big well known name like Delta, Tina Arena, Kylie, Conrad Sewell etc should have been picked, however generally most European coutnries have new and upcoming artists for the contest. So it doesn’t have to be a big name. Plus the song is the most important element, so I’m going to wait and hear Dami’s song before I decide if I think she was the right choice or not.

Juxtaposition.

cant stand Dami :frowning:

No. I’m looking at the different the reasons of why she would be selected (artist vs song). If they are selecting it based on the artist which seems to have been the case the last couple of years its a surprising choice (for reasons such as she hasn’t been very relevant the last couple years and her recent single was a flop). If they are selecting it based on the song (which I think they should be) then that could explain why she was picked if its a song that could do well.

Yes it should be about the song and the quality of the artist. It doesn’t matter whether they’ve had recent commercial success or not. Nobody in Europe knows these Australian artists anyway so that’s fine. Most people don’t know the artists from other countries that enter either. Usually obscurity is a virtue.

so has SBS revealed how those earth shattering “clues” led to Dami Im?

Why would they bother? They were just little things to build hype. There was nothing in any of them that really gave anything away, except that it was someone who played the piano and who liked chocolate and tea (which Dami does).

They were seriously pathetic. :joy:
