This has also just been released this week for digital purchase and rental. Sadly for Channel 7 that is likely the preferred way I’ll watch this. I’m sure it will rate through the roof like the John Farnham doco though (which was very good).

Depending on what rights Seven has to this, is there any chance this may end up on a streaming platform before it screens on Seven?

It’s already out to physically buy as well as digitally to rent or buy, but doubtful Seven would be trumpeting this as a marquee title for 2024 if they didn’t have the next window sewn up :man_shrugging:t2:

What are the chances of it going on a streaming platform before going on channel 7 though?

This also got a small (but still decent for an Aussie indie doco) theatrical release. Is Seven really pumping this up as a 2024 title when it’s really just a movie they have the rights to show in a faster window…?

No more than the John Farnham or Jimmy Barnes docos they have screened before.

Ego: The Michael Gudinski Story

The wild ride of Aussie hitmaker, trailblazer and maverick entrepreneur Michael Gudinski

The Seven Network has confirmed the Australian television premiere of hit feature documentary Ego: The Michael Gudinski Story – the wild ride of maverick entrepreneur Michael Gudinski – for 7.30pm Tuesday, 9 April on Channel 7 and 7plus.

Ego: The Michael Gudinski Story follows Gudinski over five decades, providing rare insight into how the hitmaker and trailblazer inspired the soundtrack of a nation and revolutionised the Australian music industry.

Music man. Impresario. Natural born hustler. Gudinski repeatedly risked everything for his one obsession: Australian music.

At age 19, he launched Mushroom Records and went on to sign and nurture iconic artists including Skyhooks, Split Enz, Jimmy Barnes, Paul Kelly, Hunters & Collectors, Kylie Minogue, Archie Roach and Yothu Yindi.

Not content with just a label, his hunger extended to being on the road, promoting legendary international acts such as Foo Fighters, Ed Sheeran, Bruce Springsteen, and Sting. There’s barely a living Australian whose life hasn’t been touched by the music he was behind.

This shy son of immigrant Jewish parents from Melbourne became an audacious international player and Australian household name. Famed for his eccentricities and boldness, the film dives into the psyche and unorthodox tactics of Michael as he became the frontman of a cultural movement and built a music empire whose artists helped create the soundtrack of a nation. It goes to show a little confidence can go a long way.

Helmed by acclaimed feature film, documentary and music video director Paul Goldman and produced by Bethany Jones, the film features personal accounts from Gudinski himself, exclusive interviews with the some of the world’s most influential artists, rare archival footage and an electrifying soundtrack.
