Driving & Traffic

That’s why I get home faster catching public transport to/from the RSPCA ,especially if leave there late afternoon on weekdays.ON weekends I like driving there ,no traffic holdups.
On days when I have an early starting time, about 8am,the morning peak hour is not so bad if it’s school holiday time .

Currently driving around in my friend’s 14 year old Nissan Micra.Had to go back into a car that doesn’t have all the bells and whistles that all newer cars have these days,no reverse camera,Touchscreen ,push start button,Bluetooth and steering wheel controls,.As long as a car is an automatic I can drive it,lucky its not a manual.
I’m only driving to the local Woolworths though, about 3 kms, scared of something happening to it as she needs her car to get to work, etc.
If I want to travel further while I’m up here I’ll catch a bus or get a taxi

On the Gold Coast for a few nights.

When I left Newcastle this afternoon (flew up), petrol was $1.95 a litre, now here on the Gold Coast it’s $2.35.

QLD petrol was always cheaper than NSW for as long as I can remember. When I lived up here in the late 1990s, I was paying 52 cents a litre, in NSW at that time it was 70 cents. I used to love bragging to the folks back home about how much cheaper it was then!

Yeah I remember that too. Things have changed though and I read quite often now that Brisbane is the most expensive city on average for fuel.

When I first started driving in the 80s petrol in regional Queensland was always dearer than Brisbane but even that has reversed in recent years.

Having said that I noticed petrol jumped about 20 or 30c literally yesterday in SEQ. It was about $1.95 on Wednesday.

I see VicRoads (or Vic DoT as it’s technically now known) have this past completed, in conjunction with the TAC and Federal Government, a safety upgrade project covering over 60km of major arterial, on the M39/A39 corridor between the Hume (junction in Seymour) and outskirts of Shepparton, with barriers (mostly wire-rope) on both sides and if dual-carriageway median as well, for that entire stretch. It is a freeway between Seymour and Arcadia (of which has had various upgrades over the past 22 years since opening). It follows a long series of fatal or very serious collisions. The corridor is also subject to major weather events and carries an unusually high volume of commercial/freight traffic, given its links to one of the nation’s largest fruit/veg growing regions and into inland NSW and travelling all the way up to Queensland, previously (and still frequently exhibited from the old ~2000 signage) the former ‘National Highway’ shields.

The freeway is also unique, in that it’s one of the only ones in Australia that is designated rural for its entirety and starts/begins in essentially the middle of nowhere, both ends not technically connecting (yes the Hume but actually begins out of Emily St in Seymour). The only other example I can think of, albeit much more recently 9 years ago, would be NSW’s Hunter Expressway.

Have any MS users travelled this road (Goulburn Valley Freeway/Highway) before and thoughts on its user experience, quality and safety? IMO one of the most boring, monotone major roads, with the Hume only slightly behind!

There is an isolated section of declared freeway on the Pacific between Port Macquarie and Raleigh

Does anyone agree with me that’s it’s more convenient to use long term parking at an airport if travelling away for a week or more than using a taxi or public transport to travel to/from your local airport? I think it is because if you arrive home on a late flight there’s no public transport available from a major airport late at night, that’s the case here in Brisbane anyway
I worked out the cost of a taxi from my home to the airport then from airport to home would cost about the same amount.
I’ve parked my car at the airport the last few times I’ve travelled and I find it more convenient too and I know my car is safe there

Yes, but for me the tipping point is more like 3-4 days, rather than a week. But it’s the opposite for me, the longer I’m away, the cheaper taxis become in comparison. And my car stays cleaner when parked at home undercover and less weather damage to the paint and interior as the long term parking in Newcastle is all outdoors.

I can’t justify the cost I’ll be going away for about a week over Christmas and I’ll get an Uber there and back for about $30-40 each away. If the cost of the Uber was say over $100 each way I could definitely justify it.

Are there any privately owned long-term parking facilities near Brisbane Airport? If there are, you can compare the cost of a week’s parking against taxi and public transport. Some facilities should have indoor parking.

Yes I agree up to about a week. Parking is generally cheaper or on par. The other factor is timing of flights. I went to Hong Kong earlier in the year and the flight home arrived about midnight. Much easier to jump in the car than find a taxi at that time of night. Even if the train was still running at that time I’m not sure I’d be keen at that hour.

The decision was 4-3 in favour of the two plaintiffs (EV owners).

Nine News Sydney tonight reported a similar spoed limit reduction on the M7 in Sydney’s West.

A large section of road will have the limit reduced from 100 km/h to 80 until 2026 to allow for an extra lane in each direction and for the M12 interchange to be built.

The M7 should always have been built 3 lanes from the start - if only because of the number of on/off ramps. 2 lanes just doesn’t work with so many interchanges especially with all the trucks using it.

This is a great idea, but knowing the QLD government this could end up costing 2 billion+ and take 10 years

Why did construction begin without a complete design? That’s odd.
