Driving & Traffic

Yes a lot of these pileups happen in the south (eg Texas and Georgia) where it’s often ice rather than snow, and the residents aren’t as familiar with severe winters.

Found this very interesting video on the construction of the original Sydney to Newcastle tollway from Berowra to the Hawkesbury (1969).

Oh FFS. ‘What could possibly go wrong?’

I’d thought they’d run out of things to privatise!

While the state’s gas and electricity industries had been entirely privatised, the Victorian Government still owns Melbourne’s three water retail corporations: City West Water, South East Water and Yarra Valley Water.

which will merge with Western Water on 1 July to form Greater Western Water.

A real water Giant.

I might be fussing over this, but is this some sort of coincidence?
Monash freeway crashes for the second day in a row.

More shoddy journalism from ACM:

They don’t mention that The Canberra Times reported this as if it were true:

…myths about speed camera vans, the one retold most often is when the van’s camera captures the same car speeding past numerous times, only to discover later the registration recorded was the van’s own plate.

And this falsehood:

Parked on Jerrabomberra Avenue monitoring the 40km/h school zone outside Narrabundah College, the van’s location, signage and flashing hazard lights made it as obvious as a cruise ship on Lake Burley Griffin. And yet passing motorists kept speeding on by.

The LED flashers are only on when the operator is setting up. They are turned off while the system is taking infringement pictures.

And while not as bad as in other jurisdictions, this commenter is right:

as already noted, they do hide, and place themselves very often in places where they aren’t mitigating any risk just making the ‘fine-o-meter’ tick over.
Athllon Dr just before Hindmarsh Dr is a classic example. A few hundred metres of roadway between lights - how fast can anyone go in that space anyway. They hide behind a tree at the location. And as noted they love sitting at the bottom of hills, Namatjira Dr is a new favourite spot where they can catch people a bit over the limit but where they clearly aren’t intending to speed. I’m pretty cynical but their approach is more cynical.

The Monash gets quite busy during peak hour compared to other freeways in Melbourne, so there are relatively higher chances of car crashes there.

However…

Victorian Treasurer Tim Pallas said it was about ensuring drivers pay their fair share to use the roads and creating a sustainable road network.

Electric Vehicle Council of Australia CEO Behyad Jafari said the tax is about creating fairness and the long-term sustainability of the road network.

yep. i see it in Brisbane all the time - one prime example is here, under this overpass which is directly in front of the police station and only 100m or so from one of the worst roundabouts in queensland.

An EV tax is a disincentive, and premature.

“We don’t hide in the bushes”. Well that’s a flat out lie from the ACT Government. On Streeton Dr at Weston the van parks on the median strip amongst the trees, meaning you don’t see the van until you are almost level with it.

VW doesn’t seem to be asking for a lot. The federal government is the biggest problem here, if that changes then we’d be OK.

Right now I’d like to replace a 10-year old car I have but I don’t want to buy a new petrol car, so I’m still holding out, hoping VW and other manufacturers bring electric cars to Aus (VW Group being one of the biggest, as they include Audi, Skoda, and more brands).

I’d seriously look at an ID3, but the Minister for Coal, Angus Taylor, and Scott - the minister who showed off a lump of coal in Parliament - Morrison refuse to even set fuel efficiency standards.

Australia’s government is an embarrassment in so many ways now.

They really need to make the section from Clifton Beach to the CBD as limited-access road with on and off ramps. When I lived in Cairns it really was a pain to drive up to Smithfield. On another note, good to see the Bruce Highway from Mt Sheridan to Gordonvale is about become limited access soon.
