My car does this too when I put my jacket on the back seat.

Council asks state, feds for cash to keep Story Bridge going as lifespan nears end

One of Brisbane’s most iconic landmarks, the Story Bridge, will reach the end of its lifespan by 2040 unless expensive repairs ramp up.

Council revealed at its Tuesday, August 6, meeting that despite spending $78 million on the structure in the past five years even more expensive work was yet to come.

The 84-year-old bridge needed a major new renewal program to outlive its 100-year lifespan, which Council said was beyond its financial capacity.

Civic Cabinet Chair for Infrastructure Councillor Andrew Wines said he had written to the government asking for $4.5 million to help with upcoming works.

Of course, when repairs are undertake it will make it easier to obtain some steel from the bridge to incorporate in Olympic medals in 2032

I’m not surprised it needs major work. I doubt it was ever envisaged the bridge would have to take that much traffic. I use it regularly at peak times and when you’re completely stopped in the middle of it your car literally shakes and bounces due to the traffic moving in the other direction. Can be quite a shock if you’re not used to it.

Melbourne and Brisbane were the two most expensive for toll roads each week at $61.40 and $61.20 respectively. Sydney is the only other city in Australia with tolls, and it recorded a weekly average cost of $44.58.

Yet more deaths on the Bruce Highway.

Where’s the sense of urgency here? Something needs to be done.

Honestly don’t know what it will take to get the focus and investment needed. People have been up in arms for at least 20 years. A change of government might help…maybe

It’s been a while since I’ve travelled that section of the Bruce Highway, between Cairns and Townsville
There’s still a lot of work to do on that section of the highway obviously.
Travelled a few times along that section when my family were living in Townsville (in the 1970s)and we would go to visit my grandparents on their cane farm 40 kms south of Cairns.about a. 3 - 4 hours drive.

On Saturday, Punt Road property owners gathered outside the Arcadia Hotel in South Yarra on to call for the removal of the overlay.

I have a rental hybrid Toyota Corolla this week,I never driven a hybrid before, not used to not hearing the engine noise when I start it.Great little car,as always I prefer Japanese or Korean built vehicles, because then the wiper and indicator controls aren’t back to front

Agtee, hybrids are certainly very different at the start in that respect, but once you are on the move, you don’t even notice the switching between petrol and electric modes (at least not in Camrys that I’ve driven).

And the instant torque from the battery is very handy when you need that extra bit of acceleration.

It has push button start ,I’m used to that because my Mazda has it too

Same with my Mazda 6 … Though I turn off the auto ā€œstop startā€ feature in mine since the automatic restarting of the petrol engine from eg traffic lights isn’t very smooth.

I do that with mine too

Me too. I turn off the auto stop start every single time. I hate it. It’s not that it’s overly jerky but I just don’t like the sensation. And when the engine is off the AC doesn’t really keep up. By the time it realises the temp is rising in the cabin and starts the engine it’s way too late lol. I live in Brisbane where it’s mid-30s this week - in winter

Transport for NSW has confirmed that the final stage of Sydney Gateway, linking Sydney Airport international terminal and M8 Westconnex, will open as planned this Sunday, September 1.

Since the M8 opened, it seems to have done little to ease the traffic on the M5 even though it’s supposed to be a duplication of that road. It unfortunately has not been an alternative route because of it’s unusual entry points.

I hope this link actually eases the traffic problems on the M5 but I’m worried that drivers will still not choose it. While, the entry point for the M5 is south west for this south west road, this new link actually sends you north for quite some distance before redirecting you south west on the M8. Could be confusing for drivers who have a good sense of direction. Why am I driving north, when I need to go south west? They really need to push the promos for this alternative road.

I’ve had the first experience of using the west connex and M8 this morning and return this afternoon from drummoyne to Milperra and back for a work meeting. It was really great and cut a significant amount of time off the trip.

I don’t see the M8 as a duplication of the M5, it really just connects the M4 and M5 together and to the airports (when the new Gateway opens on Sunday).

If the M8 was working well, it could have the potential to send more traffic onto the M5, and take traffic off arterial roads like the Hume Hwy and Canterbury Road.
