ACMA has released a video about how captions are made.
Why is SBS still listed as “SBS ONE” in its LCN name?
Here’s my channel surf video of the South Coast TV channels, recorded a few hours ago.
It’s crazy that WIN hasn’t noticed the old channel names yet.
Staying in a remote WA motel tonight. TV hasn’t had a scan since before WIN HD started in '16, lol.
Edit: Tried to rescan it for the next guest, but it turns out this is what the local self-help transmitter is broadcasting. Both GWN and WIN have no or incorrect LCNs allocated for some channels as per image. No SNOW at all either. SBS World Movies was on 352 but I fixed that with a rescan.
I thought the networks had more control over self-helps?
Interesting! That seems to imply that the configuration of self-helps has no or minimal input whatsoever from the networks / affiliates themselves. I guess it’s whoever the shire hires to set the transmitter up that does it?
Self-helps in VAST areas have local transcoding and multiplexing equipment which is configured locally. The broadcasters have no control over it. It’s entirely up to whoever owns the site to make sure it’s configured properly and kept up to date with new/altered channels.
Self-helps within terrestrial broadcast areas are a simpler affair as they pick up the terrestrial broadcast from a nearby site and spit it back out on another frequency for the locals. If you’re lucky they’ll do a bit of error correction to clean up the signal a bit. But as they’re effectively passing through an existing DVB-T transport stream and not having to build one, any changes by the broadcaster automatically pass through.
Yes, I have noticed a different code from Mt Coot-tha to Bald Knob.
I stayed in a remote mining camp this weekend. Their MATV offering was probably the worst I’ve seen!
The only proper TV mux is ABC. The rest of the channels appear to be fed from VAST into a pretty average modulator. Quality of the channels was akin to analogue. Despite the channel showing in the list, SBS was actually just a VAST-originating ABC channel.
Also helped set up a Sky Racing MATV system at a remote race club. Teletext is no longer carried by WIN so these nifty little devices were knocked up by RWWA to inject teletext on an RF channel.
Once the Pi boots up, it outputs a test card wallpaper for tuning.
I thought sky moved their text services to video
I think RWWA/TAB WA use their own service independent of Sky’s.
Almost certainly using a composite modulator that they were probably using with Aurora…
I thought the same thing, but it’s actually digital so I’m not sure it predates VAST. Got to be the most compact digital mod I’ve seen. Should have swiped it
Yep, WA TAB produce their own Teletext stuff that gets sent to the broadcaster for insertion into their broadcast.
They’re trying to phase it out with their race walls, which are all locally generated, but they’re not there yet, and WIN/9 have pulled the plug on Teletext before they could upgrade them all, hence that setup.
Digital TV scan from Cairns on 24th February 2010.
Interesting, was Skytext ever carried by Foxtel or did businesses need to get Sky Channel/Racing direct?
Venues have always had to deal with Sky directly for access to their channels and teletext. In fact, the Foxtel version of Sky Racing (1) used to be a watered-down version of Sky Channel. They’re all the same now though. But, I’m not entirely sure if the text services were ever carried by Foxtel.
Correct, it makes sense too.
