Digital TV Technical Discussion

And trying to watch something like sports on those SD simulcasts is like having cataracts. Don’t know how anyone could watch them. Ditch them Nine!

Saw this on a TV show - is there some sort of analogue antenna in play here in NZ?

When I was in Melbourne a few weeks ago I flicked through the channels and the SD channels looked horrible, the HD ones looking better but arguably worse than the other networks.

Luckily WIN has it so there’s only 1 MPEG4 stream for each channel (HD for Nine, Gem, Go, SD for Life), rather than MPEG2 SD streams for all 5 plus the MPEG4 streams for HD Go, Nine and Gem. If we assume MPEG4 SD has the least bandwidth (1) MPEG4 HD and MPEG2 SD have the same bandwidth (2), and MPEG2 HD is higher (3) for example, then Nine has a bandwidth number of 16 while WIN has a bandwidth number of 7.

Could be for FM radio?

Maybe it was for the (former) VHF TV Services from Mt Te Aroha prior to being switched off in 2013.

And the poor HD quality is exacerbated by fast moving scenes, such as during NRL.

The other thing is that having SD and HD versions of each channel is that it confuses a lot of people, who end up watching in SD instead of HD. Especially with Nine’s allocated channel numbers for SD and HD versions of Go and Gem.

Agree, especially with gem. Why did 9 put 9GEMHD on 95?? It should be 93 if they want to keep the sd streams for some reason. Instead 93 is 9Go!SD. And it’s not like 93 was ever 9go’s original number. It was always 99 iirc.

Judging from the picture, and location, Band 1 and UHF aimed at Mt Te Aroha for TVNZ and UHF services from Prime, Māori TV and Sky Television (scrambled picture). Band 3 on a different angle aimed at Ruru for TV3/TV4.

9Gem is SD on 92.

Seven to roll out HD feeds of Seven and 7two in Sydney from 7 October.

(In other words, no more MPEG2. It’s all MPEG4.)

Sorry, Melbourne. You’ll just have to wait a bit longer.

was discussed last week…

Thanks for noting.

If it’s “most of Seven’s channels”, then which one will still not be HD by then?

Probably channels not called 7, 7mate, 7two?

The same ones that are not HD in the other 7 markets that have gone to MPEG4. Flix, TVSN, Racing.

I guess Seven chose October 7 for the HD rollout as it is three days out from the network’s Bathurst 1000 broadcast.

Surprised Seven still hasn’t changed the website to which they are directing people. Still no mention of Sydney.

Those articles are basically the same anyway with only the cities and dates swapped out.

In fact, I’m surprised they went to the length of making three separate versions instead of merely editing one.

I know. That’s why I’m saying that they should but SD on 92 and HD on 93 instead of 95 so they’re next to each other before they transition to HD only (if that ever happens). Kinda like when 7 put 7mateHD on 74 to transition to shutting down the SD stream later.

I don’t think that matters much… there is still a ‘gap’ between 72 and 74 since 7mate SD got shutdown and I don’t find it to be an issue.

And so there’ll (most likely) be a gap with Nine’s numbering when they (eventually) get around to switching off the SD versions too.

I know it’s been said before, but look how bad the 9 sd stream is compared to hd. At this point, the blocking is so bad that it’s probably even unwatchable for people with reduced eyesight! And there’s not even any motion, just 3 static camera angles during tp!

Trouble is that those old people are the ones that would complain if they took it off and their ancient TVs couldn’t receive the channel anymore.
