The HEVC 4K channel broadcast is on ATSC 1.0 though in this case I’m speaking about. It’s a small low powered channel but I just thought it was interesting.
4K is still broadcast - just not for terrestrial.
There was also some work done to use locked-off 4K cameras for sport and have a remote operator move a virtual HD view pane around the image - it was trialled in the AFL from memory for behind the goals cameras
Anyone having reception problems around Gosford after yesterday’s rain?
For me, all the channels are working except ABC/SBS - both just give a black screen with ‘No signal’. Based on the frequencies shown in my TV’s advanced settings, Nine/Seven/Ten are coming from the North Gosford (Rumbalara) transmission site, and they’re fine.
I thought ABC/SBS came from the same location or am I mistaken?
No, you’re not mistaken… have you tried doing a rescan on your TV and see if that brings them back?
Yep, still no dice. Now ABC doesn’t show up in the available channels at all, and SBS is still barely working.
Just for comparison, from my TVs advanced settings, SBS (613.5Mhz) is only 25 strength and 60 quality. Seven (627.5Mhz), Nine (634.5Mhz) and Ten (641.5Mhz) are all close to 90 strength and 100 quality.
hmm, I’ve just checked the ABC TV Outages page… nothing showing there for the Gosford area (Rumbalara Trig).
I wonder if all the rain yesterday has gotten into your TV antenna balun/wiring and caused some damage?
Just checked the TX site for Rumbulara and both ABC and SBS are at correct power and appears to be going to air with no issues
Bit late to answer, but yes there were multiple transmission issues at the Gosford DTV site yesterday due to the heavy rain & strong winds, I was on site from about 2am & another tech took over from me at 7am, I wasn’t entirely happy as I was called in from holidays, but the things we techs do to keep you guys happy with watching TV & listening to radio.
TXA had everything working by around 5pm, BAI tech had to come to site not long after that to fix SBS which didn’t recover after a power outage earlier in the afternoon, but had everything working properly & left site at 7:30pm.
After the BAI tech left site, all channels at Gosford should’ve/would’ve been working 100% as normal, any further receive issues after that (which is around the time of your first post) would be at your location. If you’re still having problems, try another rescan on your TV first & see if that fixes things, not that it happens often these days, but some TV’s don’t like it if a channel goes off air, they don’t pick it up as working normal when it comes back & they need a rescan, especially if you tuned in while the station was off/no signal.
Thanks for the replies all, I’ll try some more troubleshooting.
@RFBurns It’s amazing to get info directly from technicians such as yourself who work on these sites. One of the things I love about this forum.
@Radioman19 let us know how things are going now, I heard many people have had an issue with the ABC around Gosford since Saturday morning & this afternoon BAI did find a fault with the Gosford ABC transmission, even though it wasn’t showing any alarms & everything looked to be working normally, it was stuffing up the SFN, so some locations were getting reception from more than one location, but they were out of time with each other so no signal was the result.
I believe this fault has now been fixed by BAI, so ABC should be working again, I have heard some people have been having issues with SBS around Gosford too, but it has had a problem longer than Saturday morning.
If you’re having problems with SBS too or know someone who is, contact SBS here & let them know, then they can get BAI to go out & investigate SBS deeper as well, it could have a similar problem, they both use the same transmission equipment, just the ABC is satellite fed & SBS is fed off air from Artarmon. https://help.sbs.com.au/hc/en-au/requests/new?ticket_form_id=360000075215
@RFBurns Thanks for the info. I retuned my TV this arvo (for about the tenth time!) and now both ABC and SBS are being received perfectly. Awesome.
At Bicheno, on Tassie east coast, local TV relays here are taking the Hobart feed here, not Launceston, which surprised me a bit.
Historically, Bicheno was in the old TVT6 coverage area.
Thanks, and looks like it’s being fed off air from Mt Wellington, as all commercial channels pixelate once every 30 minutes or so, and the local Tx is right near town.
Which is not ideal when the feeder site is 140 km away. Mt Barrow is closer, only 90 kms, maybe a better choice when the only difference is the ads being the Nth Tas feed.
Without getting google earth out…I suspect there’s quite abit of rock between Bicheno and Mt Barrow.
There’s something in Victoria that I don’t understand.
Lorne and Apollo Bay, which are on the west coast, get the regional commercial channels on their translators, but Wye River, which is right in between, gets the Melbourne commercial channels on its translators. Why not the regional stations?
I can’t answer for Lorne, perhaps it gets better signals from a regional translator?
I’m not sure where the Melbourne TV licence area goes to without looking it up which I don’t have time right now, but it goes down the west coast, but I don’t think it goes to Apollo Bay (quite).
The Wye River translator only covers a small area & I think started out life as a local council self help site, which was eventually taken over by TX Australia, maybe for ease & cheap cost, it’s much easier to get off air reception of Mt Dandenong to feed the translators than one of the regional transmission sites?
The next DTV translator heading up the West coast is at Anglesea/Aireys Inlet also Melbourne Metro DTV site operated by TX Australia.
I’ll ask the question at work & see if I can find why the anomaly?
EDIT: Okay I asked at work & here’s the reason why Wye River has Melbourne metro DTV & Lorne & Apollo Bay has Regional DTV. It was a political reason, as some politicians had property’s in Wye River and apparently the regional stations couldn’t reliably get an input to the Wye River translator site from Lorne.
According to its map (see link below), the Melbourne TV licence area extends down to Aireys Inlet.
Bicheno is also part of (and the end of) the Hobart RA1 Radio licence area.
The next TV translator north (South Sister for St Marys) carries the Launceston feed.
Thanks.
