Digital Radio

Probably another offering from Hope Media?

UPDATE: Judging by the ID I heard between songs, the content seems to be “Light Christmas” from Melbourne.

Just listening to 3RRR on Sydney DAB… Very interesting!

Who is running this station in Sydney?

I hope they put on 3PBS next ;). Actually, it can wait until the new year when I’ll be back in Sydney.

If it’s running community content. I would guess its the CBAA doing some type of TACO test that SCA done.

I don’t think you can Pirate on DAB+.

Pretty much. Someone could buy all the gear to run their own multiplex unlicenced, but you can’t get that stuff cheap on eBay.

And there would probably be some sort of encryption (code) on it that a broadcaster would need to get from the ACMA in order for it to work on Australian DAB radios.

I doubt there’ll be any DAB+ pirates any time soon, the amount of equipment needed to encode, multiplex & transmit DAB+ is staggering plus the cost would be prohibitive.

Sorry I can’t post any photo’s. I’m around the Sydney DAB+ transmission equipment every day, & admittedly all stations are in the same place, but the racks of equipment for incoming programs to be encoded & multiplexed is huge, then there’s the DAB+ transmitters as well.

Similar in style to what 2UE had before the Talking Lifestyle relaunch!

Note the iPhone app because they haven’t included the Android app.

All the encoding and multiplexing can be done with open source software on a regular PC, it’s just the transmission stage that requires some degree of specialised hardware - but I wouldn’t say it’s crazily outside the range of pirate broadcasters.

There’s RaspberryPi based solutions that seem to be in the range of $300 - 1 Requirements · glokhoff/RaspDAB Wiki · GitHub

There is not.

Whilst in Sydney earlier this week, I added yet another Digital Radio to my collection!

It’s a Blaupunkt BR-80DABC, which was from Bing Lee at $79.

The main attractions to this unit were the 2.8" LCD screen (a first for me), and 80 presets (another first on a DAB radio).

Here’s a couple of pics, the first of the unit showing a screen display from the unit, and the 2nd is of the top of the unit showing the buttons (which have some very 80s looking font on it

Overall, I am very happy with this radio so far…

Good reception, good sound and easy to use.

Only real complaint is that the station name text (in orange) and time (in grey, in top right corner) can be hard to read when outside against the black background. That is with the display on it’s brightest setting. But I guess that is the nature of LCD technology in general.

Its almost got the feel buying a digital radio is like buying something that is about to die at times. Not many lcd screen radios around.

I noticed there has been no follow up to the lg mobile phone with dab. You cant buy it new anymore from a quick google.

Hope it doesnt die completely. At least more cars are coming online.

I’ve got a few digital radios now. The only thing I’ve had go wrong with any of them is that the AC adaptor on my Sangean has packed it in, but I emailed Sangean and they are sending me a new adaptor free of charge! Should arrive this week

Zed DAB in Sydney is STILL broadcasting 3RRR from Melbourne… Has been like this for nearly 2 weeks now.

If they switched the feed to 3PBS I’d be a happy camper- no such luck so far. 3RRR are a bit too hipster for this old dag.

I wonder how the 3RRR broadcast is getting up to Sydney for rebroadcast.

I hope to goodness that they are not using a web stream.

Just did some tests for dab radio around Richmond on my Bush pocket radio which I think you can’t buy anymore. The repeaters did help around the nice cricket oval. I could still get a consistent commercial signal. It was difficult to get the same performance with ABC. I wonder when they will switch on a repeater there for the ABC. Though I might admit it’s not booming into Richmond. I think if they just increased the power from the transmitter it would be fine. Stop worrying about overspill.
