Digital Radio

There’s not as many around now as there used to be though.

This one is the one I have and is still available.

https://www.domayne.com.au/yamaha-mcr-b043d-micro-hi-fi-system.html

It has good sound, but is slow to switch between inputs and stations.

FM Manual tuning mode only works in mono.

They exist you just need to go to specialist Hi-Fi retailers;

But overwhelmingly it’s the streaming functionality that’s proving popular with these systems.

Checked out 2CH and 2UE since the changes yesterday.

2UE is now showing up as 128kbps (up 48 kbps).
2CH crushed to 48kbps (down a massive 80 kbps).
SEN is 48kbps (new)
SEN Track = 32 kbps (new)
NTS looks like it’s gone. Not sure what that was previously, would have been where they got the extra bits from.

Interestingly, my Sangean didn’t require a rescan to see the changes.
Which means my Canberra stations are still scanned in! (though not receivable at the moment).

Basically various replayed highlights from Nine Radio (previously Macquarie, Fairfax before that) talk stations. Very rarely the station was used for special event live programming, but other than that it was mostly a waste of space.

NTS is still running in Brisbane @ 48 kbit/s
4BH and 4BC are both 104 kbit/s

That has not changed since my days there when NTS was changed from 64k Discrete Stereo down to 48k Parametric Stereo to give the other 2 stations the ability to have a bit more better bit rate

Especially when there’s 128kbps spare in Brisbane that is available for 4TAB to acquire. Could be leased to others.

If Zinc are running a rock format, would be a good DAB+ ‘disrupter’, as would Rebel & Breeze on a metro DAB+ multiplex. Perhaps @AJ1 has considered it?

I’m sure it comes down to money, Camerons wouldn’t do it for charity.

As they are not spending the money, lots of cutbacks at River with the relatively new GM given a significantly different brief to the previous and generally more Scottish style belt tightening across the Cameron family stations.

Yes agree with all of that.

I’ve also thought Radio TAB might consider running a couple of digital only music stations with their spare space.

4IP - 60s and 70s
Radio 10 - 80s

Would be great.

You’d think that SEN would be trying to access some space in Brisbane for SEN/SEN Track.

I’d think that’d be more likely than any adjacent licence area operators.

Though there’d be some resistance from 4TAB to that since its pretty much a competing format.

Perhaps but it wouldn’t be 4TAB leasing them any space.

I think this happened today (or Sunday?) sometime in Sydney.

Soundcloud Radio on DAB+ in Sydney with 32kbps.
Also SEN Track station now sitting below SEN on my DAB+ radio, was sitting amongst the defunct stations previously.

Perth has it too, reducing HIT 92.9 and MIX 94.5 down from 48kbps to 32kbps.

Another branded station, like Coles Radio?

Melbourne just had Fox/Triple M drop from 56k to 40k, with SoundCloud Radio running in the 32k that created. Ugh.

Seems like the kind of stuff Triple J Unearthed might be playing? Surely if you know of SoundCloud you’re streaming it, not listening to a DAB radio?

You’d think if they wanted to push an online service, they’d run a PodcastOne Radio and loop podcasts via DAB to at least be pushing out their own content, rather than Sound Cloud? Weird. Can’t see it lasting long - has the Radar Radio scent to it.

On another matter - is Triple M 90s broken, or do they deliberately simulcast the Danny Lakey show at night, music and all? Both DAB and the web stream are running the same content as the main Triple M.

In Brisbane it is on Brisbane 1 at 32k. 4MMM and B105 are unaffected at 48k because they are on Brisbane 2. There are 2 x MMM’s on Brisbane 1 - both at 48k.

In Sydney, Soundcloud Radio is on 9B at 32k, therefore pushing MMM Country down to 32k. All other SCA stations are on 9A.

On another note, I’ve noticed the other day that WSFM & KIIS are back down to 48k, after they were at 64k earlier this year. WSFM 80s & KIIS 90s are still at 48k.

2GB was blank airspace for a good 20 minutes on DAB approx 21.25 - 21.40 24/08/2020. The old fella wasn’t impressed got the shits and rang me to come in and figure it out, once we gathered it was only 2GB he got me to switch it up the dial to 2SM… i’m like oh yeah, Graham Girlbert hey… at least a little bit better than what comes out of 2GB…

A gift to SEN? 2UE is the only shining light on DAB radio at 128k, surely people can hear the difference?

Apparently not, or they just don’t really care about sound quality.

That’s absurd! Are the stations trying to kill off DAB+?
