The only problems I have with the S100 is that the DAB+ usage drastically reduces the battery. You only get a few hours of listening before it goes flat and you have to recharge, whereas with FM you can get much more usage out of it.
Also, if you are in a bad reception area for DAB+ and the receiver cannot pick up a strong signal of a station sometimes it freezes and there is nothing you can do until the battery is drained and you have to charge it again.
I use the envelope white batteries (Panasonic ones), I tend to only use the radio on weekends. These days I am getting lazy and using my mobile during the week. Anyway running it flat, I would say around 3-4 hours, if you keep using the screen and flick stations maybe less. I tend to never go flat, as once I use it for 2 hours I just recharge the batteries and swap them when I get home.
If you want long battery life buy this one, its AM/FM.
It sounds like it’s about the same length of usage as the S100 for DAB+, except as it has a lithium-ion battery, you just plug it in the wall socket to recharge it.
ACMA is today opening consulation to vary the Queensland Digital Radio Channel Plan, in which they’re proposing to make changes to the technicial specifications for the main Brisbane digital radio multiplex transmitter (DRMT) licences, as well as include the technical specification for an alternative main DRMT site at Lower Beechmont to faciliate the rollout of DAB+ on the Gold Coast.
It looks like the only way that Rebel Media will be able to broadcast on DAB+ on the Gold Coast will be to do a deal with Grant Broadcasters for access for some bandwidth on their DAB+ allocation.
A second transmitter at Lower Beechmont is also needed so that ABC and SBS can broadcast their suite of channels on DAB+ throughout the Gold Coast.
I didn’t get that out of the ACMA proposal, unless I missed it, discussion was about having the DAB transmitters for everyone at Mt Tambourine or Lower Beechmont, but not splitting them, & having some here & some there?
The ABC aren’t interested in DAB+, they’re highly unlikely to build their own DAB+ transmission site at Lower Beechmont, when it’ll cost them much less to join the others at Mt Tambourine.
I’ve already mentioned in an earlier post what is going to happen about DAB on the Gold Coast, but it’ll depend how this ACMA plan pans out.
I had a read of it again, and yes they refer to an ‘alternative’ site for digital radio at Lower Beechmont.
However the Lower Beechmont site will have slightly less coverage than Mount Tamborine due to site and antenna heights, but it will have less overspill.
You are right, it would be cheaper for the ABC/SBS to join the others at Mt Tamborine as opposed to building a new DAB+ transmission tower at Lower Beechmont. Mt Tamborine would be the better option.
It would be a shame if the Gold Coast misses out on the ABC/SBS broadcasting in DAB+ as they have a good range of channels, including Double J, ABC Jazz and SBS Chill.
I enjoy cwne88’s videos (or Tall Paul Tech as he now goes by, complete with a beard a shaved head to match his re-brand!), but it’s interesting hearing his comments at the end on the future of digital and analog radio.
He’s not quite in the know of the lack of momentum in this area by ACMA and the industry!
2SM Still down…I guess @RFBurns fixed the problem last time for free whilst doing his day job, you just rebooted the system ? . Not worth coming to Sydney though at this time (even though you have the special passport from up north). This DAB problem is a bit more serious.
I think it’s a link issue, either at the studios or between there & Artarmon?
Guys at Artarmon tell me the link router at Artarmon looks normal, probably just no data passing across it?
Could be the encoder at the studio has crapped itself?
Not sure when it’ll be fixed, I have let 2SM know about it though.
Something is definitely not right with the Artarmon transmitter as the DAB+ Sydney 1 ensemble is not showing when I do a rescan of my portable DAB+ radio (iRiver S100).
The only ensembles that are picked up on the scan are SY ABC&SBS RADIO and DAB+ Sydney 2.
The 2sm issue is impacting some of tuners if you choose the blank 2sm station it hangs the software a bit on my computer. It is unlike previous issues where there is reception but no audio.
