Digital Radio - Technical

Permanent i.e solid reception generally starts at Collector in the north (or around Tarago/Mt Fairy) and lasts to the hill just before Michelago. Michelago is just south of the ACT border, heading towards Cooma . There is no consistent reception in Goulburn city.

I live in Bungendore btw.

Also Canberra dab+ can be received at the Bowral lookout of the Gib, the mountain between Mittagong and Bowral. It can be received on a portable device and car radio.
Reception is very patchy, you have to be in the right position to get reception.

Re Sydney dab+ reception it is strong to around Hill Top which has excellent LOS back to Sydney. But is patchy around Renwick / Mittagong. Renwick was the limit of reception on my portable device. I don’t have a Dab+ car radio.

Sydney dab+ reception is perfect from the northern Mittagong lookout at the Gib. My portable device receives 100% signal strength and 100% signal quality with no signal errors.

A car radio would receive Sydney dab+ further south out across the Southern Highlands.

I have tried it. Very patchy once you get south of Mittagong. You would need an external Band III antenna and preamp to get in home reception at somewhere like Moss Vale. My parents (who are now in Moss Vale) were surprised that they couldn’t get 702 on DAB. Back to good old MW for them.

They don’t like 97.3 ABC Illawarra?

I have suggested it to them but they prefer 702.

I’ve got family on the south coast that will listen to 702 over 97.3 as well

I remember my late grandpa, I tuned into 97.3 at Lake Mummorah it was pretty good reception in those days no Lake Macq 97.3. He said he prefers the sound of 702 am. I guess I understand AM radio has a warmness to the sound on a good old fashion radio. This was in the early 90s.

Has ABC upgraded the Melbourne multiplex? It was scheduled for this morning but I haven’t had to do a rescan on my radio as all the stations are working.

I listened to ABC Radio Melbourne via DAB+ last week and the music was in stereo even though the program was networked from Sydney.

The online stream is in mono but when you listen again to an episode it is in stereo.

Seem likes some issues with the DAB transmitter up at Bilgola. Not sure if we have anyone from the Northern Beaches that can report on this.

No they haven’t. It’s now scheduled for tomorrow morning (Wednesday the 16th) instead of this morning (Tuesday the 15th).

I can’t exactly answer that, but did notice on the network monitoring last week or week before when wandering past the computer at Artarmon, that there was a couple of amplifiers playing up at both Collaroy & Newport DAB+ sites. I don’t know if they were for the commercials or nationals, & don’t know if they’ve been resolved, or this is a different issue?

I can tell you the Nationals DAB+ from Artarmon is about -1kW transmitter power out from the 2 commercials, because the Nationals DAB+ transmitter is past end of life, it’s barely hanging on.

Is a replacement transmitter scheduled to be installed any time soon?

Nope, the ABC won’t pay for a new one.

That says it all doesn’t it, the lake of interest in dab+ by the ABC. Maybe when the thing dies completely it may force them.

Hope so. Extraordinary that the ABC could adopt that position when clearly from CRA’s last DAB+ listenership figures that DAB+ audience is up 15% from last year & 77% of new vehicles have DAB+

I’ll be grumbling to the ABC if the TX fails permanently.

Let it fail then. I think they are more into the ABC Listen App.
