Digital Radio - Technical

Just wanting to ask - Would it be beneficial to get a DAB radio now and wait, or start to future-proof now?

If you’re in an area which can currently receive DAB+, I’d say go for it.

If not, it might be worth waiting a while.

One might be waiting a LONG while for anything else to happen, DRM or regional DAB.

A few observations about the Sydney DAB+ upgrade from the ABC.

All the ABC music stations are sounding fantastic- lots of depth, treble and bass. ABC Jazz, Double J and ABC Classic in particular sound excellent. The ABC engineers/ technicians really have done an outstanding job with the upgrade.

I’ve noticed NOVA Entertainment have also improved the sound quality on their suite of channels as a result of ABC doing their upgrades this morning. They also sound brilliant, as good as DAB+ has ever sounded. Depth, treble, bass has improved. It’s world class sounding radio. Even Coles radio on 32kbs sounds amazing.

There is a big difference in sound quality now from NOVA and ABC to ARN and SCA, which sound flat and stale by comparison.

Is there an online stream URL for the digital radio station of SCA’s ‘Australia Today’ that loops the program from that morning until the next live program?

On the digital radio plus website an error pops up stating that no stream is available. My guess is SCA wants you to listen via the LiSTNR app. And it seems that you can’t play full podcast episodes on the LiSTNR website with only a preview being available, you have to use the app.

Bloody annoying when they force you into their walled garden. But that’s commercial radio I guess.

any Sydney or Canberra DAB ever heard in Goulburn?

Canberra in Cooma?

Sydney in Newcastle?

Probably @dxnerd can confirm better than myself (since he lives in that area) but you can get Canberra DAB in parts of Goulburn. Under normal conditions it would be difficult to get Sydney dab from Goulburn.

Not sure if this has been mentioned before so apologies if it has. I found it kinda cool.

Just came thru the new M4 tunnel in Sydney. Firstly - DAB all the way. Secondly, I was on Smooth Relax and suddenly got a “ALARM WSFM 1017” on my screen. It switched to WSFM, played the tunnel control room message, then flicked back to Smooth Relax.

This was on a new i30.

Awesome. I’m guessing they only play the alarm message on one station per mux but use the emergency message flag to automatically switch supported receivers to that station. In this case WSFM.

I am on a hill 10 km south of Newcastle and I have permanent DAB reception here.

But in Newcastle itself, that is only possible on the very coastal fringe or in elevated spots.

I had a similar experience in North Connex - DAB all the way and a similar message heard, though I don’t remember seeing such a message on the screen (2016 Ford Focus).

This is the online stream: https://wz2liw.scahw.com.au/live/2listnrlive_128.stream/playlist.m3u8

It seems to run 24/7 as far as I can tell although the link from the app and Listnr website are hidden when the program isn’t live.

Impressed they have DAB in the tunnel. As far as I know none of the Brisbane tunnels have it.

Nope I use the Brisbane tunnels weekly.

Nothing.

As far as I know it’s only North and West Connex that have it. Not sure if the Harbour tunnel or the M5 tunnel have it.

Only on Mount Gladstone and as you’re driving up the hill south of town towards Nimmitabel (near the tip). There may be some reception in the elevated district known as ‘Zalka Heights’, which is the SW part of town. Cooma is in a fairly deep valley so there’s no reception in town.

Okay… When does Permanent Reception Start from the south and stop in the north?

Also hows your reception of Sydney or Canberra in Goulburn, @Laoma said you live in the area…

Doing the journey from Traralgon to Gold Coast in 2 weeks and want to know DXing opportunities.
