Digital Radio - Technical

Hi there,

You mentioned that your DAB+ software doesn’t provide the SId.

But it does. The SId = Service-ID: that is displayed in your pic above.

The SId of Classic Hits 4BH is 127D

The 0x in front of the 127D just tells us that it’s a Hex number (like the RDS PI codes).

Or is this a new DAB+ software program you’re now using?

AM is like watching a movie in black & white on film. Yes its “worse” in the sense that there’s no colours but its still satisfying, it’s just a different way of doing things.

DAB is like watching a heavily pixellated movie on YouTube in 240p over an unstable connection

Hi @TV.Cynic Your updated list is proving very useful, thank you  lots of changes & I’m updating now.

I’ll summarise the changes soon, however for the moment can you kindly check the station names against

4FC3 & 4FC0, as I have two appearances of: ‘SBS PopAsia’ & none for SBS Radio 1.

Hi SBS Radio 1 is 4FC0

If you refer to the Melbourne RA1 licence area map, you’ll note the red outline.

We all know radio waves don’t travel as discretely.

Drawing a sweeping arc around the boundary, it becomes clear that by design, much of Geelong will receive signal, albeit ‘fortuitously’ due to the shape of the licence area.

And the water path/flat terrain from Mt Dandenong.

Great comparison @tvcl

What equipment did you set the bandwidth to 18kHz?

Twice the price for DAB+, nowhere near worth that for the now open source chip. I smell a rort.

Often a bargain to be had in regional areas, they don’t have DAB+ so less incentive to buy. It didn’t sell out, was available on their website for weeks after.

I’d say warehoused until they think they can move it.

Do you receive GC DAB+ at your place or in your Seal nearby?

I was using an SDR (specifically, an AirSpy HF+). With an SDR, you can set the bandwidth to whatever you like.

In my Seal no, I do sometimes get the Commercial Multiplex in my work car and on my portable receiver when there is even a slight bump in VHF enhancement, but it is not reliable reception

What is the “Digital AM” technology in this American video?

It seems to be a DAB-esque service with RDS overlaid on top of AM? I have never heard of this.

IBOC (In-Band On-Channel.) You might know it better as HD Radio (which does not mean anything and is just a brand name).

Doesn’t the “HD” refer to High Definition? I know it’s a brand but I think that’s the inspiration behind it.

Yep - for the next time they have it on sale.

I brought another one for the bedroom, but the sound seems to be borked - very quiet, even at full charge, and in decent reception, across all modes. Might need to use that one for spare partsn, even though I ordered two new aerials from Ali Express last night.

Apparently not. Stands for “Hybrid Digital”.

Does any GC station have error correction other than EEP 3A? If so what station and error correction?

Considering how our radio market is structured you have to wonder if we would have been better served by adopting HD radio instead of the European DAB system.
